Zoloft common medical uses:
Zoloft is in a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
Zoloft affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause
depression, panic or anxiety, obsessive or compulsive symptoms, or other
psychiatric symptoms. Zoloft is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive
disorder, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), premenstrual
dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and social anxiety disorder, also known as
social phobia.
How to use Zoloft:
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors,
including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient.
If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine
you are taking, talk with your health care provider.Take Zoloft tablets
by mouth. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. You may take this
drug with or without food. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not
take your medicine more often than directed. Continue to take this medicine
even though you feel better. It can take several weeks before you feel
the full effect of sertraline. Do not stop taking except on your doctor's
advice.
Zoloft side effects:
Every medicine can cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor,
side effects.
This medicine may cause:
- agitation or restlessness
- blurred vision
- constipation (less common) or diarrhea (more common)
- difficulty sleeping
- drowsiness
- dry mouth
- flushing (redness of skin)
- headache
- indigestion, nausea
- increased or decreased appetite
- increased sweating
- intestinal gas
- sexual difficulties (decreased sexual ability or desire).
If any of these side effects continue or become bothersome, contact your
doctor.
If you experience any of the following serious symptoms, stop taking Zoloft
and call your doctor immediately:
- fast heart rate
- palpitations dizziness or lightheadedness
- fast talking and excited feelings or actions that are out of control
- skin rash, itching (hives)
- unusual tiredness or weakness
- vomiting.
Zoloft precautions:
Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider a if you are:
pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding; taking any prescription
medicine (especially CNS medications), nonprescription medicine, herbal
preparation, or dietary supplement. Tell your doctor if you have a history
of seizures; thoughts of suicide; impaired liver function; a history of
substance abuse; a disease that affects your blood or metabolism; diabetes;
heart disease; liver disease; seizures (convulsions); suicidal thoughts;
an unusual or allergic reaction to sertraline; any other medical condition.
This medicine may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or changes in vision, therefore,
use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness,
coordination, or physical dexterity. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking
this medicine. Do not take this medicine if you are currently taking or
have taken an MAO inhibitor within the last 2 weeks. If you are uncertain
whether your other medications contain an MAO inhibitor, check with your
health care provider. Do not start taking an MAO inhibitor until 2 weeks
after you stop taking this medicine. Do not stop taking this medication
without checking with your doctor. Do not give this medicine to children
under 18 years of age for less than 1 year, except to treat obsessive-compulsive
behaviors in children 6 years of age and older. Do not take any other
over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your
doctor.
Drug Interactions:
Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine
from doing its job. Zoloft has the potential to interact with a variety
of medications.
Do not take Zoloft with any of the following medications:
- astemizole (Hismanal)
- cisapride (Propulsid)
- pimozide (Orap)
- terfenadine (Seldane)
- thioridazine (Mellaril)
- medicines called MAO inhibitors-phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine
(Parnate), isocarboxazid (Marplan), selegiline (Eldepryl).
Zoloft may also interact with the following medications:
- amphetamine
- bosentan
- carbamazepine
- certain diet drugs (dexfenfluramine, fenfluramine, phentermine, sibutramine)
- certain migraine headache medicines (almotriptan, eletriptan, frovatriptan,
naratriptan, rizatriptan, sumatriptan, zolmitriptan)
- cimetidine
- cyclosporine
- dextroamphetamine
- dextromethorphan
- diazepam
- furazolidone
- linezolid
- medicines for mental depression, mania, anxiety, psychosis or difficulty
sleeping
- phenobarbital
- prescription pain medications
- procarbazine
- rifampin
- rifapentine
- selegiline
- St. John's wort
- tolbutamide
- tramadol
- warfarin.
Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all other medicines you are taking,
including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, and herbal
products.
Overdose:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or
emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include sleepiness,
nausea, vomiting, fast heartbeat, dilated pupils, and anxiety.
Missed dose:
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have
passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose
to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed,
contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Storage:
Store at controlled room temperature (between 59 to 86 degrees F). Keep
this and all medications out of the reach of children.
