Zocor instructions - side effects, uses, dosage

Zocor common medical uses uses:
Zocor is used to lower cholesterol and triglyceride (fat-like substances) levels in the blood. Using this medicine may help prevent medical problems caused by such substances clogging the blood vessels. It is only for patients whose cholesterol level is not controlled by diet. Generic simvastatin tablets are not yet available.

Dosage & How to use Zocor:
Take Zocor tablets by mouth. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. If you take the tablets once a day, it is best to take your dose in the evening hours (like with the evening meal) or at bedtime. You may take this medicine with or without food. Do not take Zocor with grapefruit juice; orange juice may be used instead. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

The dose of Zocor will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of this medication. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Dosage for oral dosage form (tablets): For high cholesterol:

  • Adults - 1 tablet a day, tablet strength is determined by your doctor.
  • Children - Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.

Zocor side effects:
Side effects that you should report to your health care professional as soon as possible:
Rare or uncommon:

  • abdominal fullness
  • bloating
  • chills
  • constipation
  • darkened urine
  • fast heartbeattroubled breathing or swallowing
  • muscle pain, tenderness, cramps, or weakness
  • redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
  • skin rash, itching
  • pains in stomach, side, or abdomen, possibly radiating to the back
  • recurrent fever
  • swelling of eyelids, face, lips, hands, or feet
  • troubled breathing or swallowing

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. However, check with your doctor if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome:

  • constipation
  • headache
  • upset stomach, indigestion, gas, heartburn
  • body aches or pain
  • cough
  • diarrhea
  • ear congestion
  • general feeling of discomfort or illness
  • headache
  • muscle aches and pains or cramping
  • muscle stiffness
  • nasal congestion
  • pain in arms or legs
  • runny nose

Zocor precautions:
Before taking Zocor tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • if you are allergic to simvastatin or any other drugs
  • what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially antacids, anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such as warfarin (Coumadin), cholestyramine (Questran), clarithromycin (Biaxin), clofibrate (Atromid-S), cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral), digoxin (Lanoxin), erythromycin, fenofibrate (TriCor), gemfibrozil (Lopid), HIV protease inhibitors such as ritonavir (Norvir) and saquinavir (Invirase), itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), nefazodone (Serzone), niacin (nicotinic acid), and vitamins
  • if you have or have ever had liver, kidney, or heart disease; a severe infection; low blood pressure; or seizures
  • if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking simvastatin, stop taking simvastatin and call your doctor immediately. Simvastatin can harm the fetus.
  • if you are having surgery, including dental surgery
  • plan to avoid unnecessary or prolonged exposure to sunlight and to wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Simvastatin may make your skin sensitive to sunlight.

Zocor is only part of a total cholesterol-lowering program. Your doctor or dietician can suggest a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet that will reduce your risk of getting heart and blood vessel disease. Avoid alcohol and smoking, and keep a proper exercise schedule.

Drug Interactions:
When you are taking Zocor it is especially important that your health care professional know if you are taking any of the following:

  • amprenavir
  • atazanavir
  • clarithromycin
  • delavirdine
  • erythromycin
  • grapefruit juice
  • indinavir
  • itraconazole
  • ketoconazole
  • lopinavir; ritonavir
  • mibefradil
  • nefazodone
  • nelfinavir
  • ritonavir
  • saquinavir
  • went yeast
  • alcohol
  • amiodarone
  • barbiturates (examples: phenobarbital, butalbital, primidone)
  • carbamazepine
  • cyclosporine
  • digoxin
  • fluconazole
  • medicines to lower cholesterol or triglycerides (examples: fenofibrate, gemfibrozil, niacin)
  • medicine used to stop early pregnancy (mifepristone, RU-486)
  • nicardipine
  • oxcarbazepine
  • rifampin, rifabutin, or rifapentine
  • St. John's Wort
  • telithromycin
  • troleandomycin
  • verapamil
  • voriconazole
  • warfarin

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

Missed dose:
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue the regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Storage:
Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open. Store at room temperature between 5 - 30 degrees C (41 - 86 degrees F). Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
