Yasmin uses:
Yasmin is an oral contraceptive. This product combines an estrogen and progestin, similar to the natural sex hormones (estrogen and progesterone) produced in a woman's body. Ethinyl estradiol is the estrogen and drospirenone is the progestin. This product can prevent ovulation and pregnancy. In general, a combination of estrogen and progestin works better than a single-ingredient product.

How to use Yasmin:
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take the first pill in a package on the first day of your period or on the first Sunday after your period begins as directed by your doctor. Take one pill every day, no more than 24 hours after the last dose. Try to take the pills at a time that you will remember every day. Taking the pill at night may reduce noticeable side effects such as headache or nausea. If you are on a 28-day cycle, take one pill every day. The 28-day cycle contains seven pills that are placebos (with no active ingredients). These are "reminder" pills to keep you on a regular cycle. They are taken while you are menstruating. Follow your doctor's instructions about using a second form of birth control when you first start taking Yasmin, when you are taking other medications, or if you miss a pill. If you are unsure what to do in any of these cases, talk to your pharmacist or doctor about how to ensure that you will not become pregnant. Have yearly physical exams and examine your breasts for lumps monthly while taking Yasmin. Your doctor may also want you to have blood tests to monitor potassium levels in your blood.

Yasmin side effects:
Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Severe side effects are relatively rare in women who are healthy and do not smoke while they are taking oral contraceptives. Many of the minor side effects may go away as your body adjusts to the medication. However, the potential for severe side effects does exist and you may want to discuss these with your doctorr.
The following symptoms or side effects may be related to blood clots and require immediate medical or emergency help:

  • coughing up blood
  • dizziness or fainting spells

  • sudden loss of coordination, especially on one side of the body

  • leg, arm or groin pain
  • sudden shortness of breath
  • swelling of the hands, feet or ankles
  • rapid weight gain
  • vision or speech problems

Yasmin is in the FDA pregnancy category X. It has been reported to cause birth defects in an unborn baby. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can have very serious negative effects on a developing baby. Do not take Yasmin if you are pregnant or if you think you might be pregnant. Do not take Yasmin without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Before using this medicine, tell your doctor about any of the following: if you are taking any other prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; if you have a history of breast cancer, a family history of breast cancer, or have ever had an abnormal breast x-ray or mammogram; if you have a history of depression; if you have a history of migraines or other headaches; if you smoke; if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, or high triglycerides; if you have a history of scanty or irregular menstrual periods; if you have any other medical condition. Tobacco smoking increases the risk of getting a blood clot or having a stroke while you are taking birth control pills, especially if you are more than 35 years old. You are strongly advised not to smoke.

Drug interactions:
Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine from doing its job. Drospirenone may increase potassium in the body.
Do not take Yasmin without first talking to your doctor if you are on daily, long-term treatment with:

  • nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
  • potassium-sparing diuretic
  • potassium supplement
  • ACE inhibitor
  • angiotensin II receptor antagonist
  • heparin.

Many other drugs may interact with Yasmin. Some interactions (e.g. with certain antibiotics, protease inhibitors, seizure medications, St. John's wort, and other medications) may result in decreased effectiveness of the medication and therefore increase the risk of unintended pregnancy. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medications, including vitamins and minerals and herbal products.

Overdose:
Consult a doctor, emergency room, or poison control left for advice if an overdose is suspected. Symptoms of an overdose include nausea, vomiting, and menstrual bleeding.

Notes:
If you have any questions about your medicine, please talk with your doctor, pharmacist, or health care provider.

Missed dose:
Try not to miss a dose. If you do, it may be necessary to consult your doctor. 28 day schedule: If you miss one dose, take it as soon as you remember and then take the next pill at the regular time as usual. You may take 2 tablets in one day. If you miss two doses (days) in a row, take 2 tablets for the next 2 days, then, continue with your regular schedule. Whenever 1 or 2 doses are missed, you should use a second method of contraception for the next 7 days in addition to taking the pills. If you miss three doses in a row, you should notify your physician or other health care professional for instructions. You will probably need to throw away the rest of the tablets in that cycle pack and start over. Another method of contraception should be used until at least 7 doses have been taken in the new cycle. Missing a pill can cause spotting or light bleeding. Make sure that no more than 7 days pass at the end of the 21 day cycle, before you start your next pack of pills. If you miss 1 of the seven inactive pills, you can either double the inactive dose or skip it, but it is important to start the next month's cycle on the scheduled day.
