Active Ingredients: Orlistat
Brand Names: Xenical
The following product information is not intended to replace the physician's
or manufacturer's instructions.
COMMON MEDICAL USES:
Xenical is a prescription weight-control medication useful for the long-term
treatment of significant obesity. XENICAL can also help to improve risk
factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood
sugar which, if not treated, could lead to other diseases such as hypertension
and diabetes. Each XENICAL capsule contains 120 mg of the active substance
orlistat, which acts as a lipase inhibitor.
XENICAL is a weight loss medication that targets the absorption of fat
in your body rather than suppressing your appetite. It is useful for long
term use and has been shown to be effective for 1-2 years. Dietary fats
are inhibited from being absorbed and this allows about 30% of the fat
eaten in the meal to pass through the gut undigested. This helps you to
reduce and maintain your weight, as well as to minimize any weight regain.
XENICAL CONTRA-INDICATIONS
- Allergy to Xenical or chronic malabsorption syndromes such as sprue
or steatorrhea.
- XENICAL is not intended to be used in children or pregnant and nursing
women.
HOW TO TAKE XENICAL:
Take Xenical exactly as directed by your doctor. Xenical is taken
with each meal (three times daily). Your daily fat intake should be divided
equally between these three meals so you will benefit from Xenical's actions.
Your medicine should be swallowed with water. Each time you take Xenical,
your meal should contain no more than about 30% of calories from fat.
Do not take more of this medication than has been prescribed for you.
Doses greater than 120 mg three times a day have not been shown to provide
an additional weight-loss benefit.
XENICAL POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:
Stop taking Xenical and seek emergency medical attention if you experience
a rare allergic reaction including shortness of breath; closing of your
throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face. Continue to take Xenical
and talk to your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms:
oily spotting, gas with discharge, an urgent need to go to the bathroom,
oily or fatty stools, an oily discharge, an increased number of bowel
movements, an inability to control bowel movements, orange or brown colored
oil in your stool. The bowel changes listed above are a natural effect
of blocking fat and indicate that Xenical is working. They generally occur
early in treatment, particularly after meals containing higher amounts
of fat than are recommended. These symptoms are usually temporary and
lessen or disappear as you continue treatment and keep to your recommended
diet of meals containing 30% fat. Call your doctor if you get a side effect
that bothers you or one that will not go away.
XENICAL PRECAUTIONS:
This medicine can cause changes in your bowel habits, such as fatty or
oily stools, due to the elimination of undigested fat in your stool. Xenical
reduces the absorption of supplements of some fat soluble nutrients, particularly
beta-carotene and vitamin E. You should therefore follow your doctor's
advice in taking a well balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables. You
need to watch the amount of fat in your diet. Too much dietary fat can
increase the side effects from Xenical. Also, watch for any changes in
your eyesight, skin or hair that may be caused by a vitamin deficiency.
Before taking Xenical, tell you doctor if you have any of these conditions:
an eating disorder, such as anorexia or bulimia; problems absorbing food
(chronic malabsorption); gallbladder problems or gallstones; diabetes;
an unusual or allergic reaction to orlistat, other medicines; pregnant,
trying to get pregnant or breast-feeding a child.
XENICAL DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine
from doing its job. Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription
medication you use.
Xenical may interact with the following medications:
- dietary supplements such as beta-carotene and vitamins A, D, E, and
K
- warfarin
- cyclosporine
- pravastatin
- drugs used to treat diabetes.
Since Xenical can cause decreased absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins,
you may need to take a daily multivitamin that contains normal amounts
of vitamins D, E, K and beta-carotene.
MISSED DOSE:
Take the missed dose up to one hour after a meal. If more than one hour
has passed since your last meal, skip the dose you missed and take only
your next regularly scheduled dose as directed. Do not take a double dose
of this medication. If you miss a meal, or if you have a meal without
fat, you can skip your dose of Xenical for that meal also.
OVERDOSE:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or
emergency room immediately.
