Wellbutrin common medical uses:
This medicine is a miscellaneous antidepressant used to treat depression. Wellbutrin is used to relieve symptoms of depression such as feelings of changes in appetite, tiredness, sleeping too much, insomnia, sadness, worthlessness, loss of interest in daily activities, and thoughts of death or suicide. Wellbutrin is also used to help people quit smoking.

Contraindications:
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medication, you have seizures, you are taking any other medication containing Wellbutrin, you have or have a history of an eating disorder, such as anorexia or bulimia or you are currently taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor within the last 14 days.

How to use Wellbutrin:
Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. How much drug you take and how often you take it depends on many factors (e.g. condition being treated, your age, your weight). If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your doctor. It is usually taken one to three times a day and may be taken with or without food. Avoid taking this medication close to bedtime if you are having difficulty sleeping. Continue to take the medication even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Wellbutrin without talking to your doctor, especially if you have taken large doses for a long time. It may take 4 weeks or more before the full effects of Wellbutrin are noticed. This medication can be habit forming. Do not take a larger dose, take it more often, or for a longer period than prescribed by your doctor.

Wellbutrin possible side effects:
Every medication can cause side effects. Side effects from Wellbutrin are common: drowsiness, weakness, tiredness, anxiety, dry mouth, insomnia, change in appetite or weight.
Notify your doctor if any of the following symptoms are persist or do not go away:

  • frequent urination
  • difficulty urinating
  • constipation
  • blurred vision
  • change in sex drive or ability
  • excessive sweating
  • headaches.

Contact your doctor immediately if an allergic reaction to this medication occurs. Symptoms of allergic reaction include: difficulty breathing, rash, itching, hives, swelling of the lips and tongue.
If you experience any of the following serious symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

  • seizures
  • loss of coordination
  • chest pain
  • muscle or joint pain
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • irregular heartbeat
  • seizures.

If you notice other side effects not listed here, contact your doctor.

Wellbutrin precautions:
Before using Wellbutrin, tell your doctor about any of the following: if you are pregnant or breastfeeding ; if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; if you have a history of seizures; if you have a history of head trauma; if you have liver disease, such as cirrhosis ; if you have impaired kidney function ; if you consume large amounts of alcohol or have a history of substance abuse; if you have diabetes; if you are using nicotine patches; if you have any other medical condition, such as seizures. Wellbutrin may cause seizures when taken in large doses. Because of the risk of seizures, do not use this medicine in combination with any other medication containing Wellbutrin. If a seizure occurs while taking Wellbutrin, stop using this drug and contact your doctor immediately. Your doctor will not restart therapy with this medicine. Do not substitute one form of this medication for another. This medicine may cause dizziness, drowsiness and may affect coordination, therefore use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness or physical dexterity. Alcohol can increase the risk of seizures. Avoid drinking alcohol or taking other medications that cause drowsiness (e.g. sedatives, tranquilizers) while taking Wellbutrin. Stop taking MAO inhibitors at least 14 days before taking Wellbutrin. If you are uncertain whether your other medications contain an MAO inhibitor, check with your doctor.

Wellbutrin drug interactions:
The best way to avoid harmful interactions is to tell your doctor or pharmacist what nonprescription and prescription medications you are currently taking.
Many drugs can interact with Wellbutrin, resulting in side effects or decreased effectiveness of the medicine:

  • isocarboxazid
  • phenelzine
  • tranylcypromine
  • pargyline
  • furazolidone
  • levodopa
  • theophylline
  • corticosteroids
  • seizure medications
  • sedatives
  • tranquilizers/psychiatric drugs
  • other antidepressants (amitriptyline)
  • salicylates (aspirin, salsalate)
  • morphine
  • adrenaline-like drugs
  • narcotic pain medications (codeine)

Do not start or stop any medication without doctor approval.

Overdose:
Contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include difficulty breathing or swallowing, dizziness, fainting, shakiness, sweating, blurred vision, seizure, seeing things or hearing voices that do not exist (hallucinating), loss of consciousness, rapid or pounding hearbeat.

Notes:
This medicine is only to be used by the patient for whom it is prescribed. Do not give it to others.

Missed dose:
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Storage: Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).
