Tamiflu Common Medical Uses :
Tamiflu belongs to the family of medicines called antivirals. Tamiflu is a drug used to treat infections caused by two of the most common flu viruses. This medicine may decrease the length of time you experience symptoms of the flu by 1 - 2 days. It may also help to reduce the risk of spreading the flu to others.

How to Use Tamiflu:
Tamiflu is taken by mouth. You may take medication with or without food. If Tamiflu upsets your stomach, take it with food. Follow the instructions given to you by your prescriber or health care professional.

  • For patients taking Tamiflu for treatment of the flu: This medicine works best if taken within 2 days of having flu symptoms (weakness, headache, fever, cough, and sore throat). This medicine should be taken for 5 days. Continue taking this medicine for the full time of treatment even if you begin to feel better after a few days. This will help to clear up your infection completely. If you stop taking this medicine too soon, your symptoms may return.
  • For patients taking Tamiflu for prevention of the flu after exposure: The medicine should be taken within 2 days of being exposed to the flu. This drug should be taken for at least 7 days.

Tamiflu Possible Side Effects:
Side effects due to Tamiflu are uncommon and are not usually severe.

Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • coughing
  • difficulty sleeping
  • dizziness
  • headache
  • diarrhea, nausea, vomiting

Some side effects can be serious. The following symptoms are uncommon, but if you experience any of them, call your doctor as soon as possible:

  • difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • infection and inflammation of the sinuses (nose) and chest
  • skin rash

Tamiflu Precautions:

Before taking Tamiflu, tell your doctor or/and pharmacist:

  • if you have any of the following conditions: decreased kidney function; heart disease; liver disease; lung disease; an unusual or allergic reaction to oseltamivir, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives;
  • if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, or are breast-feeding

If your symptoms do not improve after you finish taking the medicine, or if they become worse, check with your doctor.
Tamiflu is not a substitute for the flu shot. You should continue receiving an annual flu shot based upon the advice of your primary health care provider.

Drug Interactions:
Tell your health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products.
The following drugs and foods may interact with Tamiflu:

  • Probenecid - Co-administration may result in higher blood levels of the active metabolite of Tamiflu

Missed Dose:
This medicine works best when there is a constant amount in the body. To help keep the amount constant, do not miss any doses. If you miss a dose, take as soon as possible, except if it is near the next dose (within 2 hours). Then go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses. If you have missed several doses, call your prescriber or health care provider.

Overdose:
In case of overdose, call your local poison control center.
