Soma Common Medical Uses:
Soma, a muscle relaxant, is used with rest, physical therapy, and other
measures to relax muscles and relieve pain and discomfort caused by strains,
sprains, and other muscle injuries. Muscle relaxers are for specific muscle
injury and pain and should not be used for general body aches and pains.
Soma works by blocking nerve impulses (or pain sensations) that are sent
to your brain.
How to Take Soma:
Take the medication exactly as directed by your doctor. Soma comes as
a tablet to take by mouth. It usually is taken three times daily and at
bedtime. As Soma may cause an upset stomach, take the drug with food or
milk.This medication must be used in addition to rest, physical therapy
and other measures. Do not take more or less medication than prescribed
and follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
Soma Possible Side Effects:
Side effects from Soma are not common, but they can occur.
This medicine may cause:
- upset stomach
- vomiting
- dizziness
- drowsiness
- fast heart rate
- headache
If these side effects persist, worsen or do not go away, notify your
doctor.
Stop taking carisoprodol and contact your doctor immediately, if you experience
serious side effects:
- allergic reaction (closing of your throat, swelling of your lips,
tongue or face, hives)
- paralysis (loss of feeling) or extreme weakness
- difficulty breathing
- burning in the eyes
- vision loss
If you notice other side effects not listed here, contact your doctor
or pharmacist.
Soma Precautions:
Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Tell your doctor and
pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking.
Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have kidney or
liver disease. Do not take Soma without doctor approval if you are pregnant,
plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. You should know that this
drug may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Use caution when driving, operating
machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Do not drive a car
or operate machinery until you know how Soma affects you. Alcohol can
add to the drowsiness caused by this medicine, so use alcohol cautiously
while you are taking Soma. This drug is not approved for use in children
younger than 12 years of age.
Drug Interactions:
Many drugs can interact with Soma, resulting in side effects or decreased
effectiveness of the medicine. Before taking Soma, tell your doctor if
you are taking any of the following medicines:
- antihistamines: rompheniramine (Dimetane, Bromfed), chlorpheniramine
(Chlor-Trimeton, Teldrin), azatadine (Optimine), clemastine (Tavist)
and others;
- narcotics: meperidine (Demerol), morphine (MS Contin, MSIR), propoxyphene
(Darvon, Darvocet), hydrocodone (Lorcet, Vicodin), oxycodone (Percocet,
Percodan), fentanyl (Duragesic), codeine (Fiorinal, Fioricet, Tylenol
#3);
- sedatives: phenobarbital (Solfoton, Luminal), amobarbital (Amytal),
secobarbital (Seconal);
- phenothiazines: chlorpromazine (Thorazine), fluphenazine (Prolixin),
mesoridazine (Serentil), perphenazine (Trilafon), prochlorperazine (Compazine),
thioridazine (Mellaril), trifluoperazine (Stelazine);
- antidepressants: doxepin (Sinequan), imipramine (Tofranil), nortriptyline
(Pamelor), fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft),
phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate).
Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Overdose:
Seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms of a Soma overdose may include
unusual dizziness, drowsiness, low blood pressure (weakness, fainting,
confusion), fainting, nausea, vomiting, fast heartbeat, loss of consciousness.
Missed Dose:
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost
time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular
dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Storage:
Store Soma at controlled room temperature (59 to 86 degrees F). Keep in
a tight, light-resistant container.
