Skelaxin common medical uses:
Skelaxin is a muscle relaxant. It helps to relieve pain and stiffness
in muscles caused by strains, sprains, or other injury to your muscles.
Skelaxin contraindications:
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this
medicine; you tend to be anemic due to other conditions or medications;
you have severe kidney or liver dysfunction
How to use Skelaxin:
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors,
including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient.
If you have any questions about the amount and frequency of the medicine
you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take this medicine
exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take Skelaxin tablets by mouth.
Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. Take your doses at regular
intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.
Skelaxin side effects:
Every medicine can cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor,
side effects.
Contact your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following occurs:
- allergic reaction (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in
the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips)
- chills
- yellowing of the skin or eyes.
The following side effects usually do not require medical attention,
but report to your health care professional if they continue or are bothersome:
- nausea
- vomiting
- upset stomach
- drowsiness
- dizziness
- headache
- nervousness
- irritability
- tiredness.
Skelaxin precautions:
Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of
the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding;
if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine,
herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; if you have liver damage; if
you have any other medical condition. This medicine may cause dizziness
or drowsiness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring
alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Avoid drinking alcohol
and taking other medicines that cause drowsiness(sleeping pills, antihistamines)
while taking Skelaxin. Patients with previous medical conditions should
talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not
stop taking this medicine without checking with your health care provider.
Skelaxin is not approved for use in children younger than 12 years of
age.
Drug Interactions:
Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine
from doing its job. Because Skelaxin can cause drowsiness, other medicines
that also cause drowsiness may increase this effect of Skelaxin. Some
medicines that cause drowsiness are:
- alcohol-containing medicines
- barbiturates such as phenobarbital
- certain antidepressants or tranquilizers (doxepin (Sinequan), imipramine
(Tofranil), fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft),
phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate))
- narcotics (pain killers) such as meperidine (Demerol), morphine (MS
Contin, MSIR), propoxyphene (Darvon, Darvocet), hydrocodone (Lorcet,
Vicodin), oxycodone (Percocet, Percodan) and codeine (Fiorinal, Fioricet,
Tylenol #3)
- certain medicines used for anxiety or to help produce sleep
- certain antihistamines used in cold medicines
Ask your health care professional about other medicines that may increase
the effect of Skelaxin. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you
are taking, including nonprescription medicines, nutritional supplements,
or herbal products. Also tell your doctor if you are a frequent user of
drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs.
These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your doctor before
stopping or starting any medicines.
Overdose:
Call your doctor or emergency room right away. Symptoms of a Skelaxin
overdose might include low blood pressure (weakness, fainting, confusion),
nausea, severe drowsiness, decreased breathing, and unconsciousness.
Notes:
If you have any questions about your medicine, please talk with your doctor,
pharmacist, or health care provider.
Missed dose:
You should take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it
is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only
your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this
medication.
Storage:
Store at controlled room temperature (between 59 and 86 degrees F).
