Zocor Medical Uses
Zocor (Simvastatin) is the first drug shown to reduce the total death rate by reducing LDL ("bad" cholesterol) concentrations in people with coronary heart disease. Zocor is proven to reduce coronary heart disease events, such as heart attack and angina (chest pain), and deaths due to heart attack.
Zocor is a prescription medication that lowers the levels of "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides and raises the level of "good" cholesterol in the blood. LDL, or low-density lipoprotein, is referred to as the "bad" cholesterol. HDL, or high-density lipoprotein, is known as the "good" cholesterol. Zocor is for both adults and children older than 10 years whose cholesterol is not reduced enough with exercise and a low-fat diet.

Buy Zocor to lower cholesterol
Zocor helps save the lives of people with high cholesterol and heart disease by reducing their risk of a heart attack A heart attack occurs when part of the blood circulation that feeds the heart is blocked. This blockage starves that part of the heart muscle of oxygen, causing it to become damaged. This damaged area pumps less efficiently, which may result in heart failure. In the Scandinavian Simvastatin Survival Study (4S), a clinical study among people with high cholesterol and heart disease, Zocor demonstrated strong results:

  • 42% fewer deaths from heart disease
  • 28% fewer first strokes or mini-strokes

Zocor works silently to reduce cholesterol. If you don’t feel stronger or healthier after taking this medication on a daily basis, that does not mean that Zocor isn’t helping to lower your cholesterol. Remember, this drug is most effective if you take it every day as recommended by your doctor. Zocor is a time-tested medication. In the past 12 years, over 200 million prescriptions have been filled for this medication.

Interesting Zocor facts

Zocor facts
  • The development of Zocor (simvastatin) was closely linked with the research and development of Lipitor (lovastatin). Biochemist Jesse Huff and his colleagues at Merck began researching the biosynthesis of cholesterol in the early 1950s. In 1956, mevalonic acid was isolated from a yeast extract by Karl Folkers, Carl Hoffman, and others at Merck; while Huff and his associates confirmed that mevalonic acid was an intermediate in cholesterol biosynthesis.
  • In 1959, the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme (a major contributor of internal cholesterol production) was discovered by researchers at the Max Planck Institute. This discovery encouraged scientists worldwide to find an effective inhibitor of this enzyme.
  • By 1976, Akira Endo had isolated the first inhibitor (compactin) from yeast cultures in Sankyo, Japan.
  • In 1979, Hoffman and colleagues isolated lovastatin from a strain of the fungus Aspergillus terreus. While developing and researching lovastatin, Merck scientists synthetically derived a more potent HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor from a fermentation product of Aspergillus terreus, which was designated MK-733 (later to be named simvastatin).
  • From recent research it has become apparent that simvastatin and other statins inhibit the progression of atherosclerosis beyond their effects on LDL.
  • As the body produces most cholesterol at night, statins are generally more effective if taken at night.
  • On June 23, 2006 the FDA approved the first generic version of the cholesterol-lowering statin drug Zocor.
  • Generic simvastatin tablets are made in doses of 5 milligrams, 10 milligrams, 20 milligrams, and 40 milligrams by IVAX Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Generic 80-milligram simvastatin tablets are made by Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals Inc.
