Lipitor is a prescription drug for lowering cholesterol.
Before taking any medicine, it’s good to know how it works. Lipitor
lowers LDL cholesterol by blocking an enzyme in the liver that
your body uses to make cholesterol. When less cholesterol is produced,
the liver uses up more of it from the bloodstream. This results
in lower levels in your blood. Lipitor lowers LDL (low-density
lipoprotein) or “bad” cholesterol levels in the blood by 39 to
60% (average effect depending on dose). “Bad” cholesterol can
sometimes build up in your arteries and can slow or clog the flow
of blood - this could put you at risk for heart disease. Lipitor
also increases the level of HDL (high-density lipoprotein) or
“good” cholesterol in the blood which also helps get rid of the
“bad” cholesterol.
Uses: Lipitor is taken once a day. It can be taken with or without
food, day or night. It's helpful to remember to try and take Lipitor
at about the same time every day. Nighttime is thought to be the
best time to take Lipitor since cholesterol metabolism rises during
the night.
