Evista Medical Uses
Evista (Raloxifene Hydrochloride) belongs to a class of drugs called selective
estrogen receptor modulators, or SERMs. This medication is used to prevent
and treat osteoporosis (brittle bones), a disease common in women past
menopause, which results in bones that break easily. It also is used to
prevent breast cancer, although this is still experimental. Talk to your
doctor about the possible risks of using this drug for your condition.
Evista has estrogen-like effects on bone and increases bone mineral density.

Women experience a rapid bone loss in the years following menopause which
puts them at an earlier risk of fractures. One of every two women over
50 years of age will experience a fracture related to osteoporosis as
compared to only one in eight men over the age of 50 years. By the age
of 75, nearly 90 percent of women suffer the effects of osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a disease that causes the loss of bone over time. When
your body loses bone mass, your chance of breaking bones increases. Particularly
in elderly people, broken bones are often disabling. Osteoporosis is believed
to be caused by an imbalance in two types of cells that are responsible
for making bone (osteoblasts) and for breaking it down (osteoclasts).
When osteoclasts break bone down faster than osteoblasts can build bone
back up, osteoporosis occurs. Raloxifene (Evista) is approved for the
prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, and belongs to a class of drugs
called selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). SERMs act similarly
to estrogen by binding on estrogen receptors to increase bone density.
SERMs have been shown to prevent bone loss, particularly in the spine
and hip but also throughout the body.
