Celexa Medical Uses
Celexa (Citalopram hydrobromide) is in a class of drugs called selective
serotonin reuptake inhibitors. This medication is used to treat depression.
It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural chemicals
in the brain. This medication has also been used to treat certain eating
disorders (e.g., anorexia nervosa, bulimia).
Depression is an illness that can cause noticeable changes in your moods,
your perceptions of yourself and your environment. Depression is characterized
by low levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine
in the brain. These drugs (SSRIs) increase the duration of action of
the neurotransmitters by blocking their removal, or re-uptake, from
the synapse.
Celexa (Citalopram hydrobromide) to treat depression
Celexa (Citalopram) is a prescription antidepressant used to treat depression - mental illness associated with
abnormal functioning of the brain. Celexa is in a class of antidepressants
(mood elevators) called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
It works by increasing the amount of serotonin, a natural chemical substance
in the brain that helps maintain mental balance.
Celexa is a good choice
for depressed patients who require continuation and long-term treatment,
as well as for elderly patients. It is also sometimes used to treat
eating disorders, alcoholism, panic disorder, premenstrual dysphoric
disorder, and social phobia. Many doctors and other healthcare professionals
have urned to citalopram for years to help their patients find relief from
depression. Because of its favorable side-effect profile and its effectiveness
within a wide range of patients with depression, citalopram may be the antidepressant
your doctor or other healthcare professional has prescribed for you.
