Celexa (Citalopram - Oral) - is in a class of drugs called
selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. This drug is used to treat
mental depression. . It works by helping to restore the balance
of certain natural chemicals in the brain. This medication has also
been used to treat certain eating disorders (such as anorexia nervosa,
bulimia).
The dose of Celexa will be different for different patients. The
following information includes only the average doses of this medication.
If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells
you to do so.
Dosing for oral dosage form (tablets): For depression:
- Older adults: Usually 20 mg once a day, taken either in the
morning or evening. Your doctor may increase your dose gradually
if needed. However, the dose usually is not more than 40 mg a
day.
- Adults: To start, usually 20 mg once a day, taken either in
the morning or evening. Your doctor may increase your dose gradually
if needed. However, the dose usually is not more than 60 mg a
day.
- Children: Use and dose must be determined by the doctor.
