Bupropion HCL Medical Uses
Wellbutrin SR (Bupropion hydrochloride Sustained-Release) is in the class of the drugs called Norepinephrine and Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitors (NDRIs). This medication is used to treat depression. Bupropion is used to relieve symptoms of depression such as feelings of changes in appetite, tiredness, sleeping too much, insomnia, sadness, worthlessness, loss of interest in daily activities, and thoughts of death or suicide. Thia drug is typically prescribed for depression when selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) are not able to be used or are not effective.

Wellbutrin SR ( Bupropion HCL) to treat depression
Everyone knows what it's like to feel sad, down, or "blue" from time to time. But when these feelings continue for two weeks or more and are accompanied by certain other physical and mental symptoms, doctors call this condition major depressive disorder (also known as depression). Depression is a real medical condition that affects over 14 million people a year in the United States. Depression is thought to be caused by an imbalance of brain chemicals. It can happen on its own, but can also be triggered by a stressful or traumatic event. The good news is that depression can be successfully treated. If you think you may have depression, you should talk to a qualified healthcare professional about your symptoms.

The development of newer antidepressant medications and mood-stabilizing drugs has improved the treatment of depression. Medications can relieve symptoms of depression and have become the first line of treatment for most types of the disorder. Drugs similar to SSRIs include Norepinephrine and Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitors (NDRIs) such as Bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban). Wellbutrin SR is as effective and safe as SSRIs but may have fewer and less sever side effects. Wellbutrin has not been associated with weight gain or sexual dysfunction but is not used for people with, or at risk for, a seizure disorder.

Interesting facts

Bupropion facts
  • GlaxoSmithKline developed a sustained-release (SR) version of Wellbutrin which releases bupropion at a slower rate.
  • Bupropion has a chemical structure unrelated to any other antidepressant medication. It is a chemical derivative of diethylpropion, an amphetamine-like substance used as an anorectic.
  • Bupropion is an effective antidepressant that has no sexual side effects unlike most other antidepressants. Interestingly, people commonly report increased libido, perhaps evidence of its dopaminergic properties.
  • However, one unusual side effect of Bupropion is that it can cause a person to sweat excessively in response to heat, nervousness or hot spicy foods like hot sauce or chili peppers. This excessive sweating is not dangerous, just an inconvenience.
