Levitra ® (Luh-VEE-Trah) Tablets (vardenafil
HCl)
Active Ingredients: Vardenafil
The following product information is not intended to replace the physician's
or manufacturer's instructions.
Levitra Common Medical Uses:
Levitra is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men age 18
years or older. Levitra increases the body's ability to achieve and maintain
an erection during sexual stimulation. Levitra is for use by prescription
only. Levitra does not directly cause an erection of the penis, but it
alters the body’s response to sexual stimulation by enhancing the effect
of the nitric oxide. Nitric oxide causes relaxation of the muscles in
the penis, which allows for better blood flow to the penile area. This
medication does not cure impotency, increase a man’s sexual desire, protect
from sexually transmitted diseases, or serve as birth control. It only
helps maintain an erection when a man is sexually excited.
How to Take Levitra:
Take Levitra exactly as your doctor prescribes. Levitra comes as a tablet
to take by mouth in different doses (5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg). For most
men, the recommended starting dose is 10 mg. Your doctor will prescribe
the dose that is right for you. It should be taken as needed about 1 hour
before sexual activity. Levitra can be taken with or without food. Some
form of sexual stimulation is needed for an erection to occur with Levitra.
This drug should not be taken more than once a day. Follow the
directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor to
explain any part you do not understand. Take Levitra exactly as directed.
Do not take more or less of it, or take it more often than prescribed
by your doctor, or change your dose of Levitra without talking to your
doctor. Levitra should not be taken with grapefruit or grapefruit juice.
This medicine can interact with grapefruit and grapefruit juice, and the
interaction may have dangerous effects. Contact your doctor or seek emergency
medical attention for any erection that lasts longer than 4 hours. A sustained
erection can damage the penis.
Levitra Possible Side Effects:
The most common side effects with Levitra are:
- headache
- flushing
- stuffy or runny nose
- indigestion
- upset stomach
- dizziness.
These side effects usually go away after a few hours. Call your doctor
if you get a side effect that bothers you or one that will not go away.
Levitra may uncommonly cause an erection that won't go away (priapism).
If you get an erection that lasts more than 4 hours, get medical help
right away. Priapism must be treated as soon as possible or lasting damage
can happen to your penis including the inability to have erections. Levitra
may uncommonly cause vision changes, such as seeing a blue tinge to objects
or having difficulty telling the difference between the colors blue and
green. These are not all the side effects of Levitra. For more information,
ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Levitra Precautions:
Do not take any other drug used to treat impotence, such as alprostadil
(Caverject, Muse, Edex) or yohimbine (Yocon, Yodoxin), without first talking
to your doctor. Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to
Levitra or any of its ingredients, or any other medications. The active
ingredient in Levitra is called vardenafil. Before taking Levitra, tell
your doctor what prescription and nonprescription medications you are
taking especially: any medicines called "nitrates" such as isosorbide
(Imdur, Ismo, Isordil) or nitroglycerin (Nitro-Bid, Nitrostat) (nitrates
are commonly used to treat angina, angina is a symptom of heart disease
and can cause pain in your chest, jaw, or down your arm; some recreational
drugs called "poppers" also contain nitrates, such as amyl nitrate
and butyl nitrate); medicines called "alpha-blockers" such as
terazosin (Hytrin), tamsulosin (Flomax), prazosin (Minipress), and doxazosin
(Cardura) (alpha-blockers are sometimes prescribed for prostate problems
or high blood pressure; if Levitra is taken with alpha-blockers, your
blood pressure could suddenly drop to an unsafe level); medications for
high blood pressure; medications to treat an irregular heart rate. Also
tell your doctor and pharmacist if you take erythromycin, itraconazole
(Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), phenobarbital, rifampin (Rifadin,
Rimactane), ritonavir (Norvir), indinavir (Crixivan), any other medications
to treat impotence, or any vitamins or herbal supplements. Tell your doctor
if you have been told by your healthcare provider to not have sexual activity
because of health problems. Sexual activity can put an extra strain on
your heart, especially if your heart is already weak from a heart attack
or heart disease.
Before taking Levitra, tell your doctor about all your medical problems,
if you have or have ever had:
- an erection that lasted more than 4 hours
- heart problems such as angina, heart failure, irregular heartbeats
or heart rate or have had a heart attack. Ask your doctor if it is safe
for you to have sexual activity
- low blood pressure or have high blood pressure that is not controlled
- had a stroke
- or any family members have a rare heart condition known as prolongation
of the QT interval (long QT syndrome)
- heart, kidney, or liver disease
- retinitis pigmentosa, a rare genetic (runs in families) eye disease
- stomach ulcers
- a bleeding problem
- conditions affecting the shape of the penis (for example, angulation,
cavernosal fibrosa, or Peyronie's disease)
- blood cell problems such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma,
or leukemia
Levitra should not be taken with grapefruit or grapefruit juice, because
Levitra can interact with grapefruit and grapefruit juice, and the interaction
may have dangerous effects.
Drug Interactions:
The best way to avoid harmful interactions is to tell your doctor what
prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements
you are taking. Levitra and other medicines may affect each other. Always
check with your doctor before starting or stopping any medicines. Especially
tell your doctor if you take any of the following:
- medicines called nitrates;
- medicines called alpha-blockers: Hytrin (terazosin HCl), Flomax (tamsulosin
HCl), Cardura (doxazosin mesylate), Minipress (prazosin HCl), Uroxatral
alfuzosin HCl);
- medicines that treat abnormal heartbeat: quinidine, procainamide,
amiodarone and sotalol;
- ritonavir (Norvir) or indinavir sulfate (Crixivan);
- ketoconazole or itraconazole (such as Nizoral, Sporanox);
- erythromycin;
- other medicines or treatments for erectile dysfunction.
Missed Dose:
Levitra should only be taken as needed approximately 60 minutes prior
to sexual intercourse. However, Levitra should not be taken more than
one time per day. Doses should be taken at least 24 hours apart.
Overdose:
If you take too much Levitra , call your doctor or emergency room right
away.
Storage:
Store at room temperature between 59° and 86° F (15° to 30° C). Keep Levitra
and all medicines out of the reach of children.
Notes:
Levitra is only for men with erectile dysfunction (impotence). Levitra
is not for women or children. This medicine must be used only under a
doctor's care. Do not use Levitra for a condition for which it was not
prescribed. Do not give this medicine to other people, even if they have
the same symptoms that you have. It may harm them.
