Common Medical Uses:
Prilosec belongs to a class of drugs called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). Omeprazole is used to treat ulcers; gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which backward flow of acid from the stomach causes heartburn and injury of the food pipe (esophagus); conditions where the stomach produces too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Omeprazole is used in combination with antibiotics to eliminate H. pylori, a bacteria that causes ulcers.

How to Use Prilosec:
Take Prilosec exactly as directed by your doctor. Omeprazole is usually taken once a day, before a meal. You should swallow the capsule whole. Do not open, crush, break or chew it. Contents of the capsule may be sprinkled on soft food (applesauce). Continue to take Prilosec even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Prilosec without talking to your doctor.

Prilosec Possible Side Effects:

Although side effects from omeprazole are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • headache
  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • upset stomach
  • vomiting
  • stomach pain
  • cough
  • dizziness
  • mild rash

Serious side effects are rare. The following symptoms are uncommon, but if you experience any of them, stop taking Prilosec and call your doctor immediately:

  • allergic reaction (skin rash, itching, difficulty breathing, closing of your throat, swelling of your lips, tongue, or face, hives)
  • severe skin rash with swelling and peeling
  • unusual bleeding or bruising

Prilosec Warnings & Precautions:

  • Don't take if: You are allergic to Omeprazole
  • Before taking Prilosec , tell your doctor or/and pharmacist:
    • if you have liver disease or a history of liver disease
  • Skin & sunlight: No special problems expected.
  • Driving, piloting or hazardous work: No special problems expected.
  • Discontinuing: Don't discontinue without consulting your doctor, even if you feel well.
  • Pregnancy: Risk category C. It is not known whether Prilosec will be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take Prilosec without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.
  • Breast feeding: Omeprazole passes into human breast milk and this medicine has been shown to cause unwanted effects.

Drug Interactions:
The following drugs and foods may interact with Prilosec:

  • anticoagulants (Warfarin) - may cause serious unwanted effects including abnormal bleeding
  • ketoconazole (Nizoral) - reduced effectiveness of ketoconazole
  • digoxin (Lanoxin) - increased digoxin toxicity
  • phenytoin (Dilantin)
  • can increase the concentrations in blood of diazepam (Valium), warfarin (Coumadin), and phenytoin (Dilantin) by decreasing the elimination of these drugs by the liver.

Tell your health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products.

Missed Dose:
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms: severe dizziness, seizures, difficulty breathing.
