The following product information is not intended to replace the physician's
or manufacturer's instructions.
Common Medical Uses:
Prevacid belongs to a class of drugs called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs).
Prevacid is used to treat stomach (duodenal or gastric) ulcers and gastroesophogeal
reflux disease (GERD). This medication is also used in combination with
antibiotics for the treatment and eradication of H. pylori bacteria (the
cause of a majority of duodenal ulcers).
How to Use Prevacid:
Take Prevacid exactly as directed by your doctor. Take each dose with
a full glass of water. Prevacid should be taken just before a meal. If
you're using the delayed-release capsules and you're having trouble swallowing
them, you can sprinkle the contents on a tablespoon of applesauce. Swallow
immediately without chewing or crushing the granules. You can also mix
the granules with 2 ounces of orange juice or tomato juice.
Continue to take Prevacid even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Prevacid
without talking to your doctor.
It is safe to take antacids as needed while you are taking Prevacid but
do not take antacids at the same time as your dose of Prevacid. Take antacids
at least 2 hours before or after your Prevacid.
Prevacid Possible Side Effects:
Although side effects from Lansoprazole are not common, they can occur.
Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
- diarrhea
- abdominal pain
- nausea
Serious side effects are rare. The following symptoms are uncommon, but
if you experience any of them, stop taking Prevacid and call your doctor
immediately:
- allergic reaction (skin rash, itching, difficulty breathing, closing
of your throat, swelling of your lips, tongue, or face, hives)
- unusual bleeding or bruising
Prevacid Warnings & Precautions:
- Don't take if: You are allergic to Lansoprazole
- Before taking Prevacid , tell your doctor or/and pharmacist:
- if you have liver disease or a history of liver disease
- Skin & sunlight: No special problems expected.
- Driving, piloting or hazardous work: No special problems expected.
- Discontinuing: Don't discontinue without consulting your doctor,
even if you feel well.
- Pregnancy: Risk category B. It is not expected to be harmful
to an unborn baby. Do not take Prevacid without first talking to your
doctor if you are pregnant.
- Breast feeding: Lansoprazole passes into human breast milk
and this medicine has been shown to cause unwanted effects.
- Do not smoke. Smoking increases the amount of acid produced
by the stomach and will aggravate your condition.
Drug Interactions:
The following drugs and foods may interact with Prevacid:
- anticoagulants (Warfarin) - may cause serious unwanted effects including
abnormal bleeding
- ketoconazole (Nizoral) - reduced effectiveness of ketoconazole
- digoxin (Lanoxin) - increased digoxin toxicity
- phenytoin (Dilantin)
- sucralfate (Carafate) - may decrease the amount of Prevacid that is
absorbed through the stomach. Prevacid should be taken at least 30 minutes
before sucralfate to prevent an interaction.
- can increase the concentrations in blood of diazepam (Valium), warfarin
(Coumadin), and phenytoin (Dilantin) by decreasing the elimination of
these drugs by the liver.
- iron supplements
Tell your health care professional about all other medicines you are
taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements,
or herbal products.
Missed Dose:
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost
time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular
dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Overdose:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or
emergency room immediately. Symptoms: severe dizziness, seizures, difficulty
breathing.
