Common Medical Uses:
Nexium belongs to a class of drugs called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). It is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux (backwash of stomach acid into the esophagus, resulting in heartburn), erosive esophagitis (severe, chronic inflammation of the esophagus) and in combination with amoxicillin and clarithromycin, to reduce the risk of recurrence of duodenal (intestinal) ulcers caused by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori.

How to Use Nexium:
Take Nexium exactly as directed by your doctor. Take the drug at least one hour before a meal. Swallow the capsule whole. Do not crush, break, or chew the capsule. They are specially formulated to release slowly in the body. If you cannot swallow the capsule whole, you may open it and sprinkle the granules contained in the capsule on one tablespoonful of applesauce or yogurt and swallow it immediately. Do not chew or crush the granules. Take this medicine for the full time of treatment, even if you begin to feel better.

Nexium Possible Side Effects:

Nexium may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • diarrhea
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • headaches
  • stomach pain
  • dry mouth

Some side effects can be serious. The following symptoms are uncommon, but if you experience any of them, stop taking Nexium and call your doctor immediately:

  • allergic reaction (skin rash, itching, difficulty breathing, closing of your throat, swelling of your lips, tongue, or face, hives)

Nexium Warnings & Precautions:

  • Don't take if: You are allergic to Esomeprazole
  • Before taking Nexium , tell your doctor or/and pharmacist:
    • if you have liver disease or a history of liver disease
  • Skin & sunlight: No special problems expected.
  • Driving, piloting or hazardous work: No special problems expected.
  • Discontinuing: Don't discontinue without consulting your doctor, even if you feel well.
  • Pregnancy: Risk category B. It is unlikely to harm an unborn baby. Do not take Nexium without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant.
  • Breast feeding: It is not known whether Nexium passes into breast milk. This medication has not been adequately studied in nursing women.

Drug Interactions:
The following drugs and foods may interact with Nexium:

  • Anticoagulants (Warfarin) - may cause serious unwanted effects including abnormal bleeding

Tell your health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products.

Missed Dose:
Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at the same time.

Overdose:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms: severe dizziness, seizures, difficulty breathing.
