Common Medical Uses:
Clindamycin is used to treat bacterial infections. It is used to treat infections of the respiratory tract, skin, pelvis, vagina, and abdomen.

How to Take Clindamycin:
The capsule form of clindamycin should be taken with a full glass (8 ounces) of water or with meals to prevent irritation of the esophagus (tube between the throat and stomach). Take at regular intervals, every 6 or 8 hours, during the day and night. It is best to take clindamycin 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating. Do not lie down for 1 - 2 hours after taking clindamycin to avoid irritation to your throat. If clindamycin upsets your stomach you can take it with food. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course of medicine prescribed by your health care professional even if you feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated. If you stop taking this medicine too soon, your symptoms may return. Do not stop using except on your doctor's advice.

Clindamycin Possible Side Effects:
Clindamycin may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • upset stomach
  • vomiting
  • gas
  • mild diarrhea
  • iItching of rectal, or genital areas

Some side effects can be serious. The following symptoms are uncommon, but if you experience any of them, stop taking Clindamycin and call your doctor as soon as possible:

  • abdominal or stomach cramps and pain (severe)
  • abdominal tenderness
  • severe and watery diarrhea with blood or mucus
  • fever
  • sore throat
  • skin rash, redness, and itching

Clindamycin Warnings & Precautions:

  • Don't take if: you are allergic to lincomycins, clindamycin or doxorubicin.
  • Before taking Clindamycin, tell your doctor or/and pharmacist:
    • if you have a kidney or liver disease. Severe kidney or liver disease may increase blood levels of this medicine, increasing the chance of side effects.
    • if you have s a history of gastrointestinal disorders (especially colitis, including colitis caused by antibiotics, or enteritis). Patients with a history of stomach or intestinal disease may have an increased chance of side effects.
    • if you have had yeast infections of mouth, skin or vagina
    • if you will have surgery within 2 months, including dental surgery or spinal anesthesia.
  • Driving, piloting or hazardous work: No problems expected
  • Pregnancy: Risk category B. Not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Avoid if possible. Consult you doctor.
  • Breast feeding: Clindamycin passes into the breast milk. However, clindamycin has not been reported to cause problems in nursing babies.
  • Discontinuing: Don't discontinue without consulting doctor until you complete prescribed dose, even though symptoms diminish or disappear.

Drug Interactions:
Tell your health care professional about all medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products.
The following drugs and foods may interact with Ciprofloxacin:

  • Antidiarrheal preparations (decreased clindamycin effect)
  • Antimyasthenics (decreased antimyasthenic effect)
  • Chloramphenicol (decreased clindamycin effect)
  • Erythromycins (decreased clindamycin effect)
  • Muscle blockers (increased actions of muscle blockers to unsafe deqree, avoid)
  • Narcotic pain relivers (increased risk of respiratory problems)

Missed Dose:
If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

Overdose:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room for instructions. Symptoms: severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
