Common Medical Uses:
Bacampicillin is a penicillin antibiotic. This drug is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including those of the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, and middle ear. Bacampicillin is effective only against infections caused by bacteria.

How to Use Bacampicillin:
Take bacampicillin exactly as directed by your doctor. Take each dose of medication with a full glass of water. Bacampicillin can be taken with or without food. Bacampicillin should be taken at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day and night to keep the medicine level in your blood high enough to treat the infection. Take all of the bacampicillin that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated.

Bacampicillin Possible Side Effects:
Bacampicillin may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • mild diarrhea or abdominal pain
  • headache
  • sore mouth or tongue
  • white patches in the mouth and/or on the tongue
  • vaginal itching and discharge

Some side effects can be serious. The following symptoms are uncommon, but if you experience any of them, stop taking Bacampicillin and call your doctor as soon as possible:

  • an allergic reaction (shortness of breath; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; rash; or fainting)
  • seizures
  • severe watery diarrhea and abdominal cramps
  • unusual bleeding or bruising.

Bacampicillin Warnings & Precautions:

  • Don't take if: you are allergic to penicillins or cephalosporins, a life-threatening reaction may occur.
  • Before taking Bacampicillin, tell your doctor or/and pharmacist:
    • if you are allergic to any substance or drug
    • if you have mononucleosis
    • if you have congestive heart failure
    • if you have high blood pressure, or any bleeding disorder
    • if you have kidney disease
    • if you have stomach or intestinal disease (especially colitis, including colitis caused by antibiotics)
  • Skin & sunlight: No problems expected.
  • Driving, piloting or hazardous work: Usually not dangerous.
  • Pregnancy: Risk category B. It is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not, however, take bacampicillin without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.
  • Breast feeding: Drug passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing baby, although it is not expected to be harmful. Child may become sensitive to penicillins and have allergic reactions to penicillin drug. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
  • Discontinuing: Don't discontinue without consulting doctor until you complete prescribed dose, even though symptoms diminish or disappear.
  • Don't take medicines for diarrhea withoutv your doctor's approval.
  • Urine sugar tests for diabetes may show false positive result.

Drug Interactions:
Tell your health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products.
The following drugs may interact with Bacampicillin:

  • Chloramphenicol (decreased effect of both drugs)
  • Cholestyramine (may decrease Bacampicillin effect)
  • Colestipol (may decrease Bacampicillin effect)
  • Oral contraceptives (impaired contraceptive efficiency)
  • Erythromycins (decreased effect of both drugs)
  • Methotrexate (increased risk of methotrexate toxicity)
  • Probenecid (increased effect of penicillins)
  • Sodium benzoate and sodium phenylacetate (may reduce effect of sodium benzoate and sodium phenylacetate)
  • Sulfonamides (decreased penicillin effect)
  • Tetracyclines (decreased effect of both drugs)

Possible interactions with other substances:

  • Alcohol - may irritate the stomach if taken with bacampicillin

Missed Dose:
Take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosage schedule. Do not double the next dose.

Overdose:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms: severe diarrhea, nausea or vomiting.
