Patient Education Monograph Raloxifene HCl
Tablets (ral-OX-ih-FEEN HIGH-droe-KLOR-ide)
Common Brand Name Evista Tablet
The following product information is not intended to replace the physician's
or manufacturer's instructions.
Evista uses:
Evista belongs to a class of drugs called selective estrogen receptor
modulators, or SERMs. This medication is used to prevent and treat osteoporosis
(brittle bones), a disease common in women past menopause, which results
in bones that break easily. It also is used to prevent breast cancer,
although this is still experimental. Talk to your doctor about the possible
risks of using this drug for your condition. Evista works by acting like
estrogen, a hormone produced by the body. Like estrogen, raloxifene increases
the density of bone.
Evista contraindications:
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this
medicine; you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding;
you have a history of blood clots in the legs, lungs, or eyes; you are
going to be bedridden or immobile; you have not gone through menopause.
How to use Evista:
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors,
including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient.
If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine
you are taking, talk with your health care provider. The tablet may be
taken with or without food. It usually is taken once a day. Stop taking
this medicine 72 hours before and during prolonged immobilization such
as postsurgical recovery and prolonged bed rest. Avoid prolonged restriction
of movement during travel because of increased blood-clotting risk. Take
additional calcium and vitamin D if daily dietary intake is inadequate.
Evista should not be taken if you have not gone through menopause. This
medicine may cause an increased risk of blood clots, especially during
the first 4 months of treatment. Continue to take Evista even if you feel
well. Do not stop or change the amount of medicine you are taking without
talking to your doctor. Take the drug exactly as directed.
Evista possible
side effects:
Every medicine can cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor,
side effects. Notify your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or
do not go away: upset stomach, vomiting, appetite and weight changes,
vaginal bleeding or spotting, hot flashes, muscle weakness or pain, swelling
of the hands, feet, or lower legs, breast swelling or tenderness, difficulty
falling asleep, cough or sore throat lasting more than 3 days. If you
experience any of the following serious symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of your throat, hives);
sudden, severe vomiting; sudden, severe headache; speech problems; sudden
partial or complete loss of vision; crushing chest pain or chest heaviness;
severe stomach pain; calf pain; weakness or numbness of an arm or leg;
unexplained vaginal bleeding. Side effects other than those listed here
may also occur.
Evista precautions:
Before taking Evista, ask your pharmacist or doctor for a copy of the
manufacturer's information for the patient. Before having any surgery,
tell your doctor that you are taking Evista. Treatment with Evista may
need to be stopped temporarily if you require an extended period of bed
rest. Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to raloxifene
or any other drugs. Before using this medicine, tell your doctor if you
are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, especially ampicillin
(Polycillin, Omnipen, Principen), anticoagulants ("blood thinners"), cholestyramine
(Questran), clofibrate (Atromid-S), diazepam (Valium, Valrelease, Zetran),
diazoxide (Proglycem), estrogen (Premarin). Tell your doctor if you have
or have ever had breast lumps or cancer; high blood cholesterol and fats;
a history of stroke, blood clots, or heart attack; liver or heart disease;
or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). Tell your doctor if you are
pregnant or are breast-feeding. Smoking, alcohol use and lack of exercise
have been linked to bone loss.
Drug Interaction:
The best way to avoid harmful interactions is to tell your doctor what
medications you are currently taking. Before taking Evista, talk to your
doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- cholestyramine (Questran, Prevalite)
- colestipol (Colestid)
- blood thinner warfarin (Coumadin)
- estrogen or progesterone product such as birth control pills or hormone
replacement therapy.
Overdose:
Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken or
given too much of this medicine.
Missed dose:
If a dose is missed, take or give it as soon as possible. If several hours
have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double
the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one
dose is missed, restart medication and advise your doctor or pharmacist
at your next visit.
