Generic Name: Permethrin Skin Cream
The following product information is not intended to replace the physician's
or manufacturer's instructions.
Elimite Common Medical Uses:
Elimite is a pediculicide and a scabicide. It kills parasites and their
eggs. Elimite (permethrin) 5% Cream is a topical scabicidal agent for
the treatment of infestation with Sarcoptes scabiei (scabies). It is available
in an off-white, vanishing cream base. Elimite Cream is for topical use
only. Generic permethrin skin cream is available.
How to Use Elimite:
Permethrin is for external use only. Do not take by mouth. Follow the
directions on the prescription label. If you are to use the cream, follow
these steps:
- wash your entire body or take a shower
- thoroughly massage the cream into your skin over your entire body,
from your head to your toes, it is important to apply Elimite cream
everywhere on your body, not just where the rash is
- scabies rarely infests the scalp of adults, although the hairline,
neck, side of the head, and forehead may be infested in older people
and in infants. Infants should be treated on the scalp, side of the
head, and forehead
- leave the cream on for 8-14 hours
- wash the cream off after 8-14 hours by bathing and shampooing
- after treatment, itching may continue for up to 4 weeks.
Elimite Possible Side Effects:
Serious side effects are not likely to occur. Tell your doctor if any
of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
- itching
- skin irritation
- rash
- redness or mild swelling of the skin
- stinging or burning
- tingling sensation
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your
doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially
bothersome.
Elimite Precautions:
- If you are using Elimite for scabies, it is not unusual for itching
and rash to continue for as long as 2—4 weeks after treatment. These
symptoms may be a temporary reaction to the remains of the mites. This
does not mean the Elimite cream did not work or that it needs to be
reapplied. If you feel that the itching and rash is intense or if it
continues beyond 4 weeks, talk to your prescriber or health care professional
right away.
- Do not apply to open cuts or wounds. This could cause too much medication
to be absorbed by your body, which could be very dangerous.
- Scabies is spread by direct skin contact with an infected person.
Family members and sexual contacts may require treatment with Elimite.
- Avoid sexual or intimate contact with others until the infection has
been cured. Also avoid sharing hair combs, hair accessories, hats, clothing,
bed linens, and other articles of personal use. The infections are highly
contagious.
- Using a normal washing cycle, you should wash all clothing, towels
and bed linen that has touched your skin. You do not need to rewash
clean clothing that has not yet been worn. Coats, furniture, rugs, floors,
and walls do not need to be cleaned in any special manner.
- If you are applying Elimite to another person, wear plastic or disposable
gloves to protect yourself from infestation.
- Keep permethrin cream away from your eyes. If you accidentally get
some in your eyes, rinse your eyes with water right away.
Before taking Elimite, tell your doctor or/and pharmacist:
- if you are allergic to permethrin or any other drugs.
- what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking,
including vitamins.
- if you are pregnant or are breast-feeding. If you are pregnant, wear
gloves when applying permethrin to another person to prevent its absorption
through your skin.
Drug Interactions:
The following drugs and foods may interact with Elimite:
- do not apply other topical preparations to the affected area during
treatment with permethrin topical
Tell your health care professional about all other medicines you are
taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements,
or herbal products.
