Penicillin VK Medical Uses
Penicillin VK is a penicillin antibiotic. Penicillin V potassium
is the potassium salt of penicillin V.
Penicillin VK is indicated in the treatment of the following infections:
- mild to moderate upper respiratory tract infections
- scarlet fever
- mild erysipelas
- middle ear infections
- mild skin and soft tissues infections
- Vincent's gingivitis
- pharyngitis
Penicillin VK is indicated as prophylaxis to prevent recurrence
following rheumatic fever and/or chorea. Prophylaxis with oral
penicillin on a continuing basis has proved effective in preventing
recurrence of these conditions.
Penicillin VK is also used to prevent bacterial endocarditis
(inflammation of the lining of the heart) in patients with a history
of rheumatic fever or congenital heart disease who plan to have
dental work or other surgery.
