Levofloxacin (brand name: Levaquin) belongs to a class of drugs
called quinolone antibiotics. Levofloxacin is indicated for the
treatment of adults with mild, moderate, and severe infections
caused by susceptible strains of the designated microorganisms.
This antibiotic is used to treat lung, sinus, skin, and urinary
tract infections caused by bacteria. Levofloxacin kills many of
the types of bacteria and has been shown in a large number of
clinical trials to be safe and effective for the treatment of
many bacterial infections.
Antibiotic Levofloxacin is indicated for the treatment:

Levofloxacin is relatively new fluoroquinolone antibiotic, marketed by
Ortho-McNeil under the brand name Levaquin. This medicine was approved
by the FDA in 1996. Levaquin is effective against a number of gram-positive
and gram-negative bacteria. Levaquin is proven effective in treating many
conditions, such as bronchitis, sinusitis, and urinary tract infections.
It is also widely used for the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia.
Levaquin Antibiotic is not recommended for use in children or adolescents
less than 18 years of age.
Levaquin usually is given once daily. It is important to take it at
least 2 hours before or 2 hours after any antacid, or mineral supplement
with iron, calcium, zinc, or magnesium since these minerals bind levofloxacin
and prevent its absorption.
Mechanism of action: Levofloxacin inhibits the activity of a bacterial
enzyme (gyrase) that is necessary for proper DNA formation and replication.
This fights infection by preventing bacteria cells from reproducing.
