Hyzaar Medical Uses
Hyzaar (Losartan Potassium/Hydrochlorothiazide) combine an angiotensin
II receptor antagonist (Losartan Potassium) and a diuretic (hydrochlorothiazide).
Losartan works by blocking a substance in the body that causes blood
vessels to tighten. As a result, losartan relaxes blood vessels.
This lowers blood pressure and increases the supply of blood and
oxygen to the heart. Hydrochlorothiazide helps reduce the amount
of salt and water in the body by acting on the kidneys to increase
the flow of urine.
Hyzaar is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, for patients
in whom combination therapy is appropriate. Hyzaar may be administered
with other antihypertensive agents. It is indicated to reduce the
risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular
hypertropht, but this benefit does not apply to Black patients.

to low blood pressure
Hyzaar was FDA approved 04/28/1995.
Hyzaar is indicated for the treatment of hypertension. Hyzaar is not indicated
for initial therapy of hypertension, except when the hypertension is severe
enough that the value of achieving prompt blood pressure control exceeds
the risk of initiating combination therapy in these patients.
In April 2005, the FDA approved Hyzaar to reduce the risk of stroke.
Hyzaar and Cozaar are the only angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs)
indicated to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and
LVH. There is evidence that this benefit does not apply to African-American
patients.
The usual starting and maintenance dose of medication is one tablet of
Hyzaar 50/12.5 mg (losartan 50 mg/hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg) once daily.
For patients who do not respond adequately to 50/12.5 mg dosage, the dosage
may be increased to one tablet of Hyzaar 100/25 (losartan 100 mg/hydrochlorothiazide
25 mg) once daily or two tablets of Hyzaar 50/12.5 once daily. The maximum
dose is one tablet of Hyzaar 100/25 once daily or two tablets of Hyzaar
50/12.5 once daily. Usually, the antihypertensive effect is attained within
three weeks after initiation of therapy. The components of Hyzaar have
been shown to have an additive effect on blood pressure reduction, reducing
blood pressure to a greater degree than either component alone.
