Bactrim Medical Uses
Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) is an sulfa antibiotic.
There are two active compounds in co-trimoxazole, trimethoprim and
sulfamethoxazole. Sulfamethoxazole belongs to the sulphonamide group
of antibiotics. Trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole both work inside
the bacterial cell, where they stop the manufacture of a substance
called folic acid (folate). Folic acid is necessary for the production
of genetic material (DNA). Without the production of DNA the bacteria
is not able to reproduce, and the spread of the infection is stopped
(a bacteriostatic effect). Co-trimoxazole is used to treat a small
number of serious infections but serious side effects limit its
use. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim combination is used to treat:
- bronchitis
- middle ear infection
- urinary tract infections (UTI)
- traveler's diarrhea
- it is also used for the prevention and treatment of Pneumocystis
carinii pneumonia (PCP).
