Cefuroxime axetil to treat bacterial infections
Cefuroxime axetil (Ceftin) is an antibiotic that has been widely available in the
USA since 1977. Cefuroxime axetil is a semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic,
chemically similar to penicillin. Cefuroxime is effective against susceptible
bacterias causing infections of the middle ear, tonsillitis, throat infections,
laryngitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia. It is also used in treating urinary
tract infections, skin infections, and gonorrhea. This drug is useful
in treating acute bacterial bronchitis in patients with chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD).
Dosage: Please note, that the following information includes
only the average doses of Cefuroxime axetil. If your dose of thes medication
is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.
- Adults:
- The usual dose for adults and children 13 years and older:
250 mg, 2 times a day for up to 10 days. For more severe infections
the dose may be increased to 500 mg, 2 times a day.
- Throat and Tonsil Infections: the usual dose is 250 mg 2
times a day for 10 days.
- Sinus Infection: the usual dose is 250 mg 2 times a day for
10 days.
- Bronchitis: the usual dose is 250 mg or 500 mg 2 times a
day for 5 to 10 days.
- Skin Infections: the usual dose is 250 mg or 500 mg 2 times
a day for 10 days.
- Urinary Tract Infection: the usual dose is 250 mg, 2 times
a day for 7 to 10 days.
- Children:
- Cefuroxime oral suspension may be given to children ranging in age
from 3 months to 12 years. Your doctor will determine the dosage based
on your child's weight and the type of infection being treated. Cefuroxime
oral suspension is given twice a day for 10 days. The maximum daily
dose ranges from 500 to 1000 mg.
- For children who are able to swallow tablets whole, the usual dosage
for ear infection or sinus infection is 250 mg 2 times a day for 10
days.
