Cefadroxil (Duricef) is a semi- synthetic oral antibiotic in the cephalosporin
family of drugs. Cefadroxil is effective against susceptible bacteria
causing infections of the urinary tract, skin and soft- tissue as well
as pharyngitis, and laryngitis. It is related to the penicillin drugs
in how it kills bacteria, but cephalosporins have a much broader range
of activity against bacteria than penicillins. Cefadroxil will prevent
the bacteria from forming an adequate and protective cell wall. This results
in instability and subsequent death of the bacteria.
Dosing: Please note, that the following information includes
only the average doses of Cefadroxil. If your dose of thes medication
is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.
- Adults:
- Throat Infections (Strep Throat and Tonsillitis): the usual
dosage is a total of 1 gram per day in a single dose or 2 smaller
doses for 10 days.
- Urinary Tract Infections: the usual dosage for uncomplicated
infections is a total of 1 to 2 grams of Cefadroxil per day in a single
dose or 2 smaller doses.
For all other urinary tract infections, the usual dosage is a total
of 2 grams per day taken in 2 doses.
- Skin and Skin Structure Infections: the usual dose is a total
of 1 gram per day in a single dose or 2 smaller doses.
- Children:
- Throat infections: the recommended dose per day is 30 milligrams
of Cefadroxil per 2.2 pounds of body weight in a single dose or 2
smaller doses.
In the treatment of strep throat, the dose should be taken for at
least 10 days.
- Urinary tract and skin infections: the usual dose is 30 milligrams
per 2.2 pounds of body weight per day, divided into 2 doses and taken
every 12 hours.
