Order Avapro (Irbesartan) to treat high blood pressure
High blood pressure, or hypertension, means that the systolic or diastolic pressure or both are above the normal range. Normal blood pressure is defined as a systolic pressure of less than 120 and a diastolic pressure of less than 80. Systolic pressure (the higher number) indicates the pressure the heart generates to pump blood to the rest of the body. Diastolic pressure (the lower number) indicates the pressure as the heart relaxes before the next beat.

Although high blood pressure is common and often causes no symptoms, it is a major contributor to heart attack and stroke. If blood pressure remains high it can lead to serious problems. In many cases high blood pressure can be managed with lifestyle improvements, such as weight loss and dietary changes. If lifestyle changes alone do not control your high blood pressure, your doctor may prescribe you blood pressure medication. Medications can help control high blood pressure but do not cure it.

The Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers are a newer class of medications used to treat hypertension. They help to lower blood pressure by blocking angiotensin II, a hormone that causes blood vessels to constrict. This constriction of blood vessels due to angiotensin II hormone is an important component of high blood pressure. Blocking the hormone causes blood vessels to relax or dilate, and thus Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs) help to reduce blood pressure. ARBs are generally best used to treat hypertension in patients who also have diabetes or heart failure and are intolerant to a related class of blood pressure lowering drugs, called the Angiotensin Converting Enzyme inhibitors.

Avapro was FDA approved on September 30, 1997. Avapro (Irbesartan) is well-absorbed orally, long-acting allowing for once-daily administration, and unlike Cozaar (Losartan), does not exert a uricosuric effect.
