Diflucan common medical uses:
Diflucan is an antifungal medication. It is used to treat fungal infections.
This medicine is used to treat pneumonia, meningitis, vaginal yeast infections,
fungal infections of the mouth, throat, liver, kidneys, heart, urinary
tract, and abdomen. Fluconazole works by altering the membrane around
the fungus, killing the fungus without harming our body's own cells. It
may be prescribed for other reasons.
Diflucan contraindications:
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to this medicine or to similar
medications or you are breastfeeding.
How to use Diflucan:
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors,
including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have
any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are
taking, talk with your health care provider. Diflucan comes as a tablet
to take by mouth. A single dose of this medication is often used to treat
vaginal yeast infections. It is usually taken once a day. Continue to
take Diflucan even if you feel well. Your symptoms may begin to improve
before the infection is completely treated.Do not stop taking this medication
without talking to your doctor.
Diflucan side effects:
Every medicine can cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor,
side effects.
Notify your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
- upset stomach
- loss of appetite
- altered taste
- diarrhea
- nausea
- vomiting
- headache
- dizziness
- fatigue
In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this medicine
(rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing), liver damage
(pale stools, yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain, unusual fatigue,
or dark urine), skin rash stop taking Diflucan and contact your doctor
immediately.
Diflucan precautions:
In rare cases, Diflucan has caused severe liver damage, sometimes resulting
in death. Fluconazole-associated liver damage has not been attributed
to total daily dose, length of therapy, or sex or age of the patient.
This type of liver damage has usually, but not always been reversible
when this medicine was stopped. Notify your doctor immediately if you
develop nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual fatigue, loss of appetite,
yellow skin or eyes, itching, dark urine, or clay colored stools. These
symptoms may be early signs of liver damage. Do not take this medicine
if you are taking cisapride (Propulsid). Combined with cisapride (Propulsid),
Fluconazole could cause serious, even fatal, heart problems. Before taking
Diflucan, tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to fluconazole
or any other drugs. Do not take Diflucan without first talking to your
doctor if you are pregnant or or are breast-feeding. Tell your doctor
if you have or have ever had kidney or liver disease or a history of alcohol
abuse. Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription
medications you are taking, especially anticoagulants ("blood thinners")
such as warfarin (Coumadin), antiviral agents such as zidovudine (Retrovir,
AZT), astemizole (Hismanal), asthma medication, cyclosporine (Neoral,
Sandimmune), didanosine (DDI), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), medications
for stomach problems such as cimetidine (Tagamet), oral contraceptives,
oral medicine for diabetes, phenytoin (Dilantin), rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane),
terfenadine (Seldane).
Drug Interactions:
The best way to avoid harmful interactions is to tell your doctor or pharmacist
what medications you are currently taking. Do not take Diflucan if you
are taking cisapride (Propulsid). Before taking Diflucan, tell your doctor
if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:
- oral diabetes medicine (e.g. glipizide (Glucotrol), glyburide (Diabeta,
Micronase, Glynase), tolbutamide (Orinase), tolazamide (Tolinase), chlorpropamide
(Diabinese))
- warfarin (Coumadin)
- phenytoin (Dilantin, others)
- cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral)
- tacrolimus ((Prograf)
- rifabutin (Mycobutin), rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane)
- theophylline (Theo-Dur, Theolair, Theochron, Elixophyllin, Slo-Phyllin,
others)
- astemizole (Hismanal)
Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Diflucan or
affect your condition.
Missed dose:
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have
passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose
to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed,
contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Overdose:
If overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
Symptoms of overdose may include confusion, hallucinations, paranoia,
decreased movement, decreased breathing, tearing eyes, drooling, urinary
incontinence, seizures.
Storage:
Store between 41 to 86 degrees F.
