Generic Name: Cyclobenzaprine
Brand Name: Flexeril
The following product information is not intended to replace the physician's
or manufacturer's instructions.
Cyclobenzaprine common medical uses:
Cyclobenzaprine is a skeletal muscle relaxant. This medicine is used with
rest, physical therapy, and other measures to relax muscles and relieve
pain and discomfort caused by strains, sprains, and other muscle injuries.
It relieves muscle spasms of local origin but is not effective in spasms
which originate from diseases in the brain or spinal cord. Cyclobenzaprine
works on nerves in the spinal cord to dull nerve impulses or signals to
the muscles. Dulling these nerve impulses will help relieve muscle spasms.
How to use Cyclobenzaprine:
Cyclobenzaprine comes as a 10 mg tablet to take by mouth. It usually is
taken two to four times a day (or 20-40 mg each day in divided doses).
Do not exceed 60 mg daily. Do not take this drug for more than 3 weeks
without talking to your doctor. Do not take more or less medication than
prescribed and follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
Cyclobenzaprine possible side effects:
Side effects are usually mild and consist of drowsiness, dryness of the
mouth, and dizziness. If any of these side effects persist or worsen,
contact your doctor.
If you experience any of the following unlikely but serious symptoms,
call your doctor immediately:
- severe skin rash
- swelling of the face or tongue
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- irregular heart rate
- chest pain
- fever
- seizures
If you stop taking this medication suddenly, you may experience some
withdrawal effects.
Cyclobenzaprine precaution:
Before taking Cyclobenzaprine, tell your doctor and pharmacist if you
are allergic to Cyclobenzaprine or any other drugs. Tell your doctor if
you have an overactive thyroid gland, heart disease, glaucoma, or difficulty
urinating. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding before
taking Cyclobenzaprine. Cyclobenzaprine may cause dizziness or drowsiness,
so use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other
hazardous activities. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid
these activities. Remember that alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness
while you are taking Cyclobenzaprine.
Cyclobenzaprine - CONTRA-INDICATIONS:
Do not use within 14 days after discontinuing MAOI9s. Serious, potentially
fatal reactions may occur if you take Cyclobenzaprine with an antidepressant
drug known as an MAO inhibitor (such as Nardil, Parnate) or if it has
been less than 2 weeks since you last took an MAO inhibitor. You should
closely follow your doctor's advice regarding discontinuation of MAO inhibitors
before taking Cyclobenzaprine.
Drug interactions:
The best way to avoid harmful interactions is to tell your doctor and
pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking
or have taken within the last 2 weeks. Cyclobenzaprine may interact with
antidepressants of both the monoamine oxidase inhibitor class (MAOI9s)
and tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline and imipramine. If
taken with those drugs, a sudden increase in fever with convulsions may
occur.
Many drugs can increase drowsiness associated with cyclobenzaprine:
- antihistamines (brompheniramine (Dimetane, Bromfed, others), chlorpheniramine
(Chlor-Trimeton, Teldrin, others), azatadine (Optimine), clemastine
(Tavist), and others)
- narcotics (pain killers) (meperidine (Demerol), morphine (MS Contin,
MSIR, others), propoxyphene (Darvon, Darvocet), hydrocodone (Lorcet,
Vicodin), oxycodone (Percocet, Percodan), fentanyl (Duragesic), and
codeine (Fiorinal, Fioricet, Tylenol #3))
- sedatives (phenobarbital (Solfoton, Luminal), amobarbital (Amytal),
and secobarbital (Seconal))
- phenothiazines (chlorpromazine (Thorazine), fluphenazine (Prolixin),
mesoridazine (Serentil), perphenazine (Trilafon), prochlorperazine (Compazine),
thioridazine (Mellaril), and trifluoperazine (Stelazine))
- antidepressants (doxepin (Sinequan), nortriptyline (Pamelor), fluoxetine
(Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), phenelzine (Nardil),
and tranylcypromine (Parnate))
- high blood pressure drugs
Overdose:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or
emergency room immediately. Symptoms of a Cyclobenzaprine overdose may
include unusual dizziness, drowsiness, low blood pressure (weakness, fainting,
confusion), nausea, vomiting, fast or irregular heartbeat.
Missed Dose:
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost
time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only your next
regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for the
missed one.
Storage:
Store this medication at room temperature and away from excess heat and
moisture (not in the bathroom). Keep this and all medications out of the
reach of children.
