Common Brand Name Celexa

Celexa uses:
Celexa is in a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
This medication is used to treat depression. It works by helping to restore
the balance of certain natural chemicals in the brain. This medication
has also been used to treat certain eating disorders (e.g., anorexia nervosa,
bulimia).
How to use Celexa:
Follow your doctor's directions exactly. The dosage is based on your medical
condition and response to therapy. Celexa is usually taken once daily
and may be taken with or without food. Do not exceed the recommended dose
or take this medicine for longer than prescribed without checking with
your doctor. It is important to continue taking Celexa as prescribed even
if you feel well. Do not stop taking this medication without talking to
your doctor. Celexa must be taken regularly for a few weeks before its
full effect is felt.
Celexa side effects:
Side effects from Celexa are common. Nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach,
drowsiness, weakness, trouble sleeping, anxiety, nightmares, skin more
sensitive to sunlight than usual, dry mouth may occur the first several
days as your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these side effects
persist or worsen, contact your doctor.
Tell your doctor if any of the following symptoms are severe or do not
go away:
- constipation
- frequent urination
- difficulty urinating
- blurred vision
- changes in sex drive or ability excessive, sweating
If you experience any of the following unlikely but serious symptoms,
call your doctor immediately:
- an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing or swallowing , closing
of the throat, swelling of the lipsor face, severe skin rash, hives)
- jaw, neck, and back muscle spasms
- high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision)
- low blood pressure (dizziness, weakness)
- slow or difficult speech
- shuffling walk
- fever
- yellowing of the skin or eyes
- irregular heartbeat or pulse
- weight changes
- taste changes
- changes in menstrual period
- painful and/or prolonged erection
If you notice other side effects not listed here, contact your doctor.
Celexa precautions:
Before taking Celexa tell your doctor if you have an allergy to citalopram
or have had an allergy or other adverse effects during therapy with other
SSRIs. Tell your doctor your medical history: liver problems, kidney problems,
heart problems, other mental/mood disorders, history of seizures, impaired
cognitive/motor performance. Do not take Celexa without first talking
to your doctor if you are pregnant or are breast-feeding. Do not take
this drug if you have taken within the last 2 weeks a monoamine oxidase
inhibitor (MAOI) (isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine
(Parnate)). Tell your doctor what prescription and nonprescription medications
you are taking, especially fluconazole, erythromycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole,
cimetidine (Tagamet), lithium, carbamazepine. Celexa should not be taken
during treatment with escitalopram (Lexapro). Celexa may cause dizziness
or drowsiness, therefore use caution engaging in activities requiring
alertness such as driving or operating machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages,
because alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while taking Celexa
or affect your condition.
Drug interations:
Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine
from doing its job. Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription
medication you may use. Do not take Celexa if you have taken within the
last 2 weeks a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (isocarboxazid (Marplan),
phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate)). Before taking Celexa,
tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs:
- antidepressants (fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), sertraline
(Zoloft), paroxetine (Paxil), trazodone (Desyrel), nefazodone (Serzone))
- tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline (Elavil), imipramine (Tofranil),
doxepin (Sinequan), nortriptyline (Pamelor))
- seizure medication (carbamazepine (Tegretol), felbamate (Felbatol))
- stomach medicine (cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB), ranitidine (Zantac,
Zantac 75), omeprazole (Prilosec))
- narcotic pain relievers (codeine)
- antibiotics (erythromycin (Eryc-Tab, E-Mycin, E.E.S., Erythrocin,
P.C.E., others), clarithromycin (Biaxin))
- antifungal medication ( fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox),
ketoconazole (Nizoral))
- migraine medications (almotriptan (Axert), eletriptan (Relpax), frovatriptan
(Frova), naratriptan (Amerge), rizatriptan (Maxalt), sumatriptan (Imitrex),
zolmitriptan (Zomig))
- asthma medication (zafirlukast (Accolate))
- anti-anxiety drugs (diazepam)
- lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid, Lithonate, Lithotabs)
- antihistamines that cause drowsiness (diphenhydramine)
Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Overdose:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or
emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include: tiredness,
weakness, sedation, irregular heartbeat, fainting, severe dizziness or
lightheadedness.
Notes:
Do not share this medication with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests
may be performed to monitor your progress.
Missed dose:
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. However, if it is
near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual
dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of this medication.
Storage:
Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees
C) away from light and moisture. Keep this and all medications out of
the reach of children.
