Celebrex Common Medical Uses:
Celebrex is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) known as a COX-2
inhibitor. This medication is used to relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis
and rheumatoid arthritis in adults. Celebrex is also used to treat acute
pain, and to treat pain associated with menstruation. It may also be used
to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Before Using Celebrex:
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with celebrex. INFORM
YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine
that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may
be needed if you are taking an ACE inhibitor, an anticoagulant, furosemide,
lithium, or fluconazole. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions,
allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding.
Celebrex Directions:
Celebrex comes as a capsule to take by mouth. The usual dose of Celebrex
for osteoarthritis is 200 mg daily or 100 mg twice daily. Some patients
with rheumatoid arthritis may benefit from dosage of 200 mg twice daily.
The maximum daily dose should not exceed 200 mg twice daily. This medication
may be taken with or without food. If Celebrex causes an upset stomach,
take it with food. Take Celebrex exactly as directed. Do not take any
more doses of this medication unless your doctor tells you to do so. Contact
your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about
taking this medicine.
Celebrex Possible Side Effects:
Possible side effects that may occur while taking Celebrex include:
- diarrhea
- indigestion
- mild stomach pain
- gas
- nausea
- dizziness
- headache
- insomnia
If any of these side effects worsen or persist, notify your doctor.
Check with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience any of the
following serious symptoms:
- skin rash or itching
- bloating or swelling of ankles, feet, or hands
- blood in stool
- vomiting material that looks like coffee grounds
- unexplained weight gain
- unusual fatigue or lethargy
- yellowing of skin or eyes
Stop taking Celebrex and contact your doctor immediately if you experience
swelling of face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue; difficulty swallowing
or breathing; hoarseness. If you notice other side effects not listed
here, contact your doctor.
Celebrex Precautions:
Do not take Celebrex if you have had a severe allergic reaction to celecoxib,
aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. Feldene, Motrin,
Naprosyn, Clinoril), sulfonamide antibiotic (e.g. Septra DS, Bactrim DS,
Gantrisin), or any other drugs. A severe reaction includes a breathing
difficulties, severe rash, hives, dizziness. If you have a question about
whether you are allergic to this medication, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Before taking Celebrex, tell your doctor if you: drink alcohol; smoke;
have any stomach problems including ulcers or bleeding; have liver, heart,
or kidney disease; have asthma; have blood disorders (anemia); have high
blood pressure; have fluid retention; are taking a steroid medicine such
as prednisone (Deltasone and others), methylprednisolone (Medrol and others),
prednisolone (Prelone, Pediapred, and others), and others. Celebrex may
cause stomach bleeding. Daily use of alcohol, especially when combined
with this drug, may increase your risk for stomach bleeding. If you are
pregnant or breast-feeding, discuss with your doctor the benefits and
risks of using Celebrex during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Before you
begin taking any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter,
check with your doctor or pharmacist.
Drug Interactions:
Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine
from doing its job. Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription
medication you may use. Before taking Celebrex, tell your doctor if you
are taking any of the following drugs:
- aspirin or other salicylate such as salsalate (Disalcid), magnesium
salicylate (Doan's, Bayer Select Backache Formula), choline salicylate-magnesium
salicylate (Trilisate, Tricosal)
- over-the-counter cough, cold, allergy, or pain medicine that contains
aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, or ketoprofen
- diuretic (water pill) (furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril),
chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Hygroton, Thalitone), and others
- angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor (ACE inhibitor) (e.g. benazepril
(Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), lisinopril (Prinivil,
Zestril), moexipril (Univasc)
- steroid medicine (e.g. prednisone (Deltasone), methylprednisolone
(Medrol), prednisolone (Prelone, Pediapred), and others)
- anticoagulant (blood thinner) (e.g. warfarin (Coumadin))
- lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid, others)
- fluconazole (Diflucan)
Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Missed Dose:
If you miss a dose of Celebrex, take it as soon as possible. If it is
almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your
regular dosing schedule. Do NOT take 2 doses at once.
Storage:
Store Celebrex at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and
30 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light.
Notes:
Do not share Celebrex with others for whom it was not prescribed, since
they may have a problem that is not effectively treated by this drug.
Do not use this medicine for other health conditions.
