Bontril Common Medical Uses:
This medication is used as an appetite suppressant. It is used in conjunction
with an overall diet plan to reduce weight.
How to take Bontril:
Take Bontril exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Bontril is best taken
on an empty stomach one hour before meals. Sustained-release or long acting
products must be swallowed whole. Crushing or chewing them will destroy
the long action and may cause increased side effects. Avoid taking Bontril
in the evening because it may cause sleeplessness. Never take it more
often or longer than prescribed. Too much Bontril could be very dangerous
to your health. It is usually taken for 8 to 12 weeks. Use in combination
with other appetite suppressant medicine is generally not recommended.
Bontril possible side effects:
Continue to take Bontril and inform your doctor if you experience any
of the following side effects: restlessness, nervousness, insomnia, anxiety,
dizziness, headache, dry mouth, stomach upset, constipation, diarrhea.
These symptoms may occur the first few days as your body adjusts to Bontril.
Stop taking this medication and contact your doctor immediately if you
experience any of the following serious symptoms: swelling of your lips,
tongue, or face; difficulty breathing; irregular heartbeat; high blood
pressure (severe headache, blurred vision); confusion; abnormal behavior.
This medication is habit forming. Consult your doctor about stopping this
drug gradually.
Bontril precautions:
Tell your doctor your complete medical history especially if you have:
heart disease; high blood pressure; arteriosclerosis; glaucoma; diabetes;
history of drug or alcohol abuse; anxiety disorder. Consult with your
doctor before taking Bontril if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. If
you experience dizziness, blurred vision or restlessness avoid hazardous
activities. Bontril is habit forming. You can become physically and psychologically
dependent on this medicine. Withdrawal effects may occur if you stop taking
it suddenly after several weeks of continuous use. Talk to your doctor
about stopping this drug gradually. Avoid alcohol use, because it can
increase unwanted side effects of dizziness.
Drug interractions:
Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine
from doing its job. The best way to avoid harmful interactions is to tell
your doctor what prescription and nonprescription medications you are
currently taking. Don take Bontril without doctor consultation if you
have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (isocarboxazid (Marplan),
tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil)) in the last 14 days. Before
taking this drug, tell your doctor if you are taking insulin or other
diabetic drugs; guanethidine (Ismelin); tricyclic antidepressant (amitriptyline
(Elavil), doxepin (Sinequan), nortriptyline (Pamelor), imipramine (Tofranil)).
Avoid "stimulant" drugs that may increase your heart rate such
as decongestants or caffeine. Consult your doctor before taking any prescription
or over-the-counter medications.
Notes:
Bontril is not a substitute for proper diet. For maximum effects, this
must be used in conjunction with a diet and exercise program.
If You Take too much:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or
emergency room immediately. Symptoms of Bontril overdose may include restlessness,
tremor, rapid breathing, confusion, hallucinations, vomiting, an irregular
heartbeat, and seizures.
Missed dose:
If you miss a dose, do not double the next dose. Instead, skip the missed
dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Remember, a dose taken too
late in the day will cause insomnia.
Storage:
Store at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture. Keep this and
all medications out of the reach of children.
