Birth control pills and Women's health prescription drugs

Information, Articles, Resources

Birth control pills (oral contraceptives) use synthetic forms of the hormones estrogen and progesterone to prevent pregnancy. Since their introduction in the 1960s, birth control pills have maintained a high level of popularity. Women who always use the pill correctly experience an effectiveness rate of 99 percent. Under typical use, the effectiveness rate is 95 percent.

Birth control pills are avalable in the US only with a doctor's prescription. There are two types of birth control pills: "combined oral contraceptives" and "minipills." Combined oral contraceptives have a combination of two hormones - estrogen and progestin. They work by keeping the ovaries from releasing an egg. Minipills contain only one hormone, progestin. They work by thickening the cervical mucus to keep sperm from reaching the egg. Minipills are slightly less effective than combined oral contraceptives.

Because so many different formulations are available, most women are able to find one that works well for them. Oral contraceptives come in many different brands. Different brands of oral contraceptives contain slightly different medications or doses, are taken in slightly different ways, and have different risks and benefits.

Your doctor will tell you when you should start taking your oral contraceptive. Oral contraceptives are usually started on the first or fifth day of your menstrual period or on the first Sunday after or on which bleeding begins. Your doctor will also tell you whether you need to use another method of birth control during the first seven days that you take your oral contraceptive and will help you choose a method. Follow these directions carefully. Birth control pills will work to prevent pregnancy or treat acne only as long as they are taken regularly. Continue to take oral contraceptives every day even if you are spotting or bleeding, have an upset stomach, or do not think that you are likely to become pregnant. Do not stop taking birth control pills without talking to your doctor.
