The symptoms of gout are almost always acute, occurring suddenly:

  • Intense joint pain. Gout usually affects the large joint of your big toe but can occur in your feet, ankles, knees, hands and wrists. The discomfort subsides gradually over one to two weeks, leaving the joint apparently normal and pain-free.
  • Inflammation and redness. The affected joint or joints become swollen, tender and red.
  • Stiffness of the joint
  • Joint swelling of the affected joints

The goals of treatment are mainly to stop the pain and inflammation associated with the initial attack, and to prevent future attacks. Colchicine is one of the medications that is effective in reducing the pain, swelling, and inflammation associated with acute gout attacks. Another medication used to treat arthritis is Allupurinol. Allopurinol blocks the enzyme that produces uric acid. Daily use of colchicine or allopurinol helps prevent future attacks. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) also can be very effective in treating the pain and inflammation of an acute gout attack if taken soon after symptoms start.
