Amoxicillin Common Medical Uses :
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic in the class of drugs called penicillins. Amoxicillin kills or stops the growth of bacteria that cause infection. Amoxicillin is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as pneumonia; bronchitis; gonorrhea; and infections of the ears, nose, throat, urinary tract, and skin. Amoxicillin also treats some sexually transmitted disease. Generic Amoxicillin capsules are available.

How to Use Amoxicillin:
Amoxicillin comes as a capsule, a tablet, a chewable tablet, a suspension (liquid), and pediatric drops to take by mouth. It is usually taken every 12 hours (twice a day) or every 8 hours (three times a day) with or without food. Take amoxicillin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Shake the liquid and pediatric drops well before each use to mix the medication evenly. Use the bottle dropper to measure the dose of pediatric drops. The chewable tablets should be crushed or chewed thoroughly before they are swallowed. The tablets and capsules should be swallowed whole and taken with a full glass of water. Finish the full course prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better. Stopping amoxicillin too soon may cause bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics.

Amoxicillin Possible Side Effects:
Amoxicillin may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • upset stomach
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • loss of appetite
  • stomach gas or heartburn

Some side effects can be serious. The following symptoms are uncommon, but if you experience any of them, call your doctor as soon as possible:

  • difficulty breathing, wheezing
  • severe skin rash
  • yellowing of the eyes or skin
  • dizziness
  • fever or chills, sore throat
  • pain or difficulty passing urine
  • pain on swallowing
  • redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
  • seizures (convulsions)
  • stomach pain or cramps
  • swollen joints
  • severe or watery diarrhea
  • unusual bleeding or bruising
  • unusual weakness or tiredness

Amoxicillin Precautions:
Tell your health care professional if your symptoms do not improve in 2 or 3 days. If you are diabetic and taking large doses of amoxicillin, you may get a false-positive result for sugar in your urine with certain brands of urine tests. Amoxicillin may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. Use a second method of birth control while taking amoxicillin to protect against pregnancy. Alcohol may irritate your stomach if taken with amoxicillin, so use it with moderation.

Before taking amoxicillin, tell your doctor or/and pharmacist:

  • if you are allergic to amoxicillin, penicillin, cephalosporins, or any other medications.
  • what prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking.
  • if you are taking any of the following: chloramphenicol (Chlormycetin), other antibiotics, and probenecid (Benemid). Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects.
  • if you have or have ever had kidney disease, allergies, asthma, hay fever, hives, or phenylketonuria.
  • if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking amoxicillin, call your doctor.

Drug Interactions:
The following drugs and foods may interact with amoxicillin:

  • allopurinol (Zyloprim)
  • birth control pills
  • other antibiotics such as erythromycin (Ery-Tab, E-Mycin, E.E.S., others), tetracycline (Sumycin, others), minocycline (Minocin), doxycycline (Doryx, Vibramycin, others)
  • methotrexate
  • neomycin
  • probenecid (Benemid)

Tell your health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products.

Missed Dose:
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose:
In case of overdose, call your local poison control center. Symptoms of an amoxicillin overdose include muscle spasms or weakness, pain or twitching, pain in the fingers or toes, loss of feeling in the fingers or toes, seizures, confusion, coma, or agitation.
