Aldara Description: Imiquimod - Topical

Aldara Common Medical Uses:
This medicine is used topically to treat warts on the skin of the genital
and anal areas in patients 12 years of age and older. Aldara does not
cure warts, and new warts may appear during treatment. This medicine is
sometimes prescribed for other uses.
How to use Aldara:
Aldara comes as a topical cream. How much medicine you use and how often
it is used depend on many factors, including the condition being treated
and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about
the amount and/or frequency of the medicine being used, talk with your
doctor. Use this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is
important to wash your hands before and after applying Aldara to your
skin. Apply this medicine in a thin layerto the wart area three times
per week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, or Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday)
before going to sleep. Do not apply excessive amounts of this medicine
to the affected area. Remove the medicine with warm water and mild soap
6 to 10 hours after you apply it.Do not use condoms or diaphragms while
using this medication. Avoid sexual contact while the cream is on the
skin.
Aldara possible side effects:
Every medicine can cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor,
side effects. Usually the skin reactions that occur are mild or moderate.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following side effects occurs:
redness, itching, or burning of the skin, swelling or pain in the area
where imiquimod was applied, headache, fungal infection, flaking of the
skin, scabbing at application site, flu-like symptoms. Contact your doctor
or pharmacist if you notice other effects not listed above.
Aldara precautions:
Before using this medicine, tell your doctor about any of the following:
if you are allergic to imiquimod or any other drugs; if you are pregnant,
planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding; if you are taking any other
prescription and nonprescription medications, including vitamins, herbal
preparation, dietary supplement; if you have any open sores on the area
being treated. Do not share your medicine with others, even if you think
that they have the same condition you have. Avoid having genital, oral,
or anal sex while the medicine is on your skin. Make sure you wash the
cream off your skin before you engage in any sexual activity.
Drug interactions:
The best way for you to avoid harmful interactions is to inform your doctor
about all the medicines you use, (prescription and nonprescription).
Missed dose:
Apply Aldara just before going to bed on the day that you remember. Apply
only the single dose, do not apply a double dose. Resume a Monday, Wednesday,
Friday or Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday schedule, depending on what day
you resume treatment.
Overdose:
Contact your doctor at once if you feel you have used too much of
this medicine. This medicine may be harmful if swallowed. Symptoms of
overdose may include severe flaking, cracking, or swelling of affected
area; fainting; weakness.
Storage:
Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not
in the bathroom). Avoid freezing.
