Generic Name: ACYCLOVIR (ay-SYE-kloe-veer)
Brand Name: Zovirax
The following product information is not intended to replace the physician's
or manufacturer's instructions.
Acyclovir Common Medical Uses:
Acyclovir is used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses: herpes
zoster (shingles); herpes infections of the skin, lip and genital; chickenpox.
This medication does not cure herpes, but relieves the pain and may make
the infection clear faster. Oral Acyclovir decreases the frequency and
severity of recurrent sores. But it is used only by people with severe
herpes infections. Topical acyclovir does not prevent the recurrence of
sores but but relieves pain and itching if applied when the earliest symptoms
first appear. This medicine may be prescribed for other uses.
Before Using Acyclovir:
Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and over-the-counter
medicine that you are taking. Inform your doctor of any other medical
conditions such as, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding.
How to Use Acyclovir:
Acyclovir comes as an ointment for use on the skin and as a tablet, capsule,
and liquid to take by mouth. Follow the directions for using Acyclovir
provided by your doctor. This medicine may cause an upset stomach, so
it with food or milk. To clean up your infection completely, continue
taking this medicine for the full course of treatment even if you feel
better in a few days. Do not stop taking the medicine without doctor approval.
Do not miss any doses.
Acyclovir Precautions:
Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Acyclovir or any other drugs.
Before you begin taking any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter,
check with your doctor or pharmacist. Before taking this medication, tell
your doctor if you have kidney disease. If your symptoms do not improve
within a few days or if they become worse, check with your doctor. If
you are using Acyclovir for genital herpes, begin using it as soon as
you notice symptoms (pain, burning, blisters) of an infection. If you
plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks
of using Acyclovir during pregnancy. This medicine is excreted in breast
milk. If you are or will be breast-feeing while you are using this medicine,
check with your doctor to discuss the risks to your baby.
Possible Acyclovir Side Effects:
Side effects from Acyclovir are not common, but they can occur.
Side effects, that may go away during treatment, include:
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- or headache
If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor.
Call your doctor immediately if you notice any of the following serious
side effects:
- severe rash

- difficulty breathing
- little or no urine production
Contact your doctor if you notice other side effects not listed above.
Possible Food and Drug Interactions:
Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine
from doing its job. The best way to avoid harmful interactions is to tell
your doctor what prescription and nonprescription medications you are
currently taking, including vitamins, and herbals.
If You Take too much:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or
emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include change in
amount of urine, sluggishness, loss of consciousness, or seizures.
Missed Dose:
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it and take any remaining
doses for that day at evenly spaced intervals. If it is almost time for
your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing
schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
