Butalbital APAP w/Caffeine
Common Medical Uses:
Butalbital/Acetaminophen/Caffeine is a pain reliever and sedative. Acetaminophen
is a pain reliever and fever reducer. Butalbital is in a class of drugs
called barbiturates that slow down central nervous system causing relaxation.
Caffeine is believed to constrict dilated blood vessels that may contribute
to tension headaches. Together, acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine
are used to relieve complex tension headaches although exactly how it
works is unknown. Butalbital APAP w/Caffeine may be used for
purposes other than those listed in this instruction.
How to Take Butalbital APAP w/Caffeine:
The combination of acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine comes as a
capsule and tablet to take by mouth. Take Butalbital APAP w/Caffeine exactly as directed by your doctor. To prevent upset stomach,
take this medication with food or milk. Do not take more often, or for
a longer period than prescribed for you. If your pain is not being adequately
treated, talk to your doctor.
Butalbital APAP w/Caffeine
Possible Side Effects:
Although side effects from acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine are
not common, they can occur.
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking
Butalbital APAP w/Caffeine and inform your doctor:
- allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat;
swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives)
- slow, weak breathing
- liver damage (yellowing of the skin or eyes, nausea, abdominal pain
or discomfort, unusual bleeding or bruising)
- blood problems (easy or unusual bleeding or bruising)
- low blood sugar (fatigue, increased hunger or thirst, dizziness, or
fainting)
Continue to take Butalbital APAP w/Caffeine and notify your
doctor if you develop:
- breathing difficulties
- rapid/irregular heartbeat
- dry mouth
- severe stomach pain
- muscle weakness
- leg pain
- abdominal pain or decreased appetite
- headache
- nervousness
- anxiety
If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or
pharmacist.
Butalbital APAP w/Caffeine
Precautions:
Avoid activities requiring alertness (driving, operating machinery and
other hazardous activities) while taking Butalbital APAP w/Caffeine. Butalbital can cause dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision.
Avoid sleeping pills, antihistamines, sedatives, and tranquilizers except
under the supervision of your doctor. These may also make you drowsy.
Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: liver problems,
emotional/mental conditions, becose Acetaminophen may cause liver damage.
Alcohol taken during therapy with acetaminophen and butalbital may increase
your risk for liver damage and can increase drowsiness and dizziness.Check
with your doctor or pharmacist for more information. Butalbital/Acetaminophen/Caffeine
should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Small amounts
of Butalbital/Acetaminophen/Caffeine appear in breast milk. You should
not exceed 4 grams (4000 mg) of acetaminophen per day.
Drug Interactions:
The best way for you to avoid harmful interactions is to tell your doctor
and/or pharmacist what medications you are currently taking, including
prescription and nonprescription drugs, vitamins, and herbals.
- Acetaminophen and butalbital may increase the effects of other drugs
that cause drowsiness, including antidepressants, antihistamines, sedatives
, other pain relievers, anxiety medicines, and muscle relaxants.
- Do not take Butalbital APAP w/Caffeine if you have taken
a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan),
phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days.
Dangerous side effects could result.
- Many other medicines contain acetaminophen, especially over-the-counter
pain, fever, cold, and allergy medications. Too much acetaminophen can
be very dangerous.
Avoid using alcohol and large amounts of caffeinated beverages while
taking Butalbital/Acetaminophen/Caffeine. Do not start or stop any prescription
or over-the-counter medicines without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Missed Dose:
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember . However, if it is almost
time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular
dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of this medication.
Storage:
Store it at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture. Keep
this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep this
and all medications out of the reach of children.
